However, it is well known that the PF were inspired by the Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound, and then they were designed their own version. Edited by Svetonio - November 18 2014 at 11:38 |

I was merely poking fun at the "no Floyd without Barrett" remark, though I'm sure they're out there. I like Pros & Cons as well.

Just a pity that Chester plays like he's in a coma the album version has that bit of 'zip' this track needs. Opening tracks at gigs can be a bit too 'safe'. Squonk was always a better opening track because it suited the safe approach but I assume by this time it had been dropped from their live set. Thanks anyway

^^^ Thanks. Yes I have heard that and the studio version is better.
I think they did play Squonk on the Duke tour. They opened with Behind the Lines on the Abacab tour on many dates. That's quite a work out for a opener imo. |

^In all fairness, the studio version was heavily treated with recording effects that are impossible to replicate live, but it's a good effort.

Listening to ATTWT right now. Even out of sequence this is great. "Down and Out" is one of the best songs Genesis ever recorded. Balls to the wall! "Burning Rope" and "Undertow" are beautiful. "Ballad of Big" currently playing.

Funny how this album really polarises opinions. I was watching a Genesis interview about Invisble Touch on Youtube the other day. Some of the comments read like the script from American Psycho. "The very best album they ever made. Their early stuff was crap" That kind of thing, and I think they were serious! |

Sorry, mate, I'm one of "the bad ones"...I actually prefer the Banks-Collins-Hackett-Rutherford incarnation to the one with Pete.

Seriously, though, how anyone could liken "Down and Out" to bubblegum pop, even in jest, is beyond me...

Down and Out is a great song. Genesis were one of the few prog bands who were able to condense the prog sound into shorter tracks. This album is very much in the vein of Wind and Wuthering, just condensed. I seriously wonder if people who say Genesis became a pop band after Wind and Wuthering even bothered to listen to this one.
