I discovered them exactly the same way, I think it was the '10 edition.

I think that was it Ian. Funny too because one of the vendors had just been talking about them before we went in to our seats and actually heard the music.

oh yeah. It was the '10 edition. Our first year patron, we got to sit up front. That was the year we had to peel your tongue from the stage after seeing Forgas and Karolina

ELP once opened for them when they toured Italy about 1973
Some considered PFM to be the very best prog band on the planet in their early days. They seemed to capture the pastoral beauty that in a way was started by Genesis on Trespass and then added a harder technical edge that was a bit King Crimson like. There is also a Gentle Giant like complexity to their music. Quite brilliant. Greg Lake was a fan and got them signed up to Manticore although it never quite worked out commercially for all concerned which was a shame.

yeah. Perhaps even ELP themselves considered PFM that. That is he ultimate sign of respect, one of the 3 to 5 biggest and popular bands and concert attractions in the world (and not without substantial Zeppelin sized egos themselves) opening for another band.

In my native Canada, PFM were the shining light of Italian rock in the seventies, even flying over to Ottawa on a moment's notice to do a concert at a high school!
Their 1975 live album Cook was recorded in part in Toronto.

Marillion easily gets my vote. Hugely influential for better or worse. Renaissance certainly deserves a mention too. Other than that great list.

Wow! Besides the fact of once having had one of the most fantastic bands of all times (ELP!) opening their gig, this was another remarkable fact indeed, in my point of view an essential behavior of every GREAT artist!

Excellent list, but I'd suggest a few modifications:
Progressive Electronic improvement: Kraftwerk -> Klaus Schulze
Neo prog bands are lacking: Radiohead -> Marillion
Änglagård -> IQ
Maybe Traffic, Univers Zero or Gong could be replaced by one more RPI band (Le Orme?). Another Psych/Space band (Hawkwind?) might be a good idea. And I see no Post-Rock bands.
Just my humble opinion...

Can I suggest you don't replace Radiohead, Anglagard, Univers Zero or Gong, they are all great bands that are amongst the best representatives of those sub-genres.

The original OP list is pretty complete.....I would add The Moody Blues, Traffic, and Procol Harum as being influential. I know that most of us in college in the late 60's and early 70's listened to them on a regular basis.

Soft Machine is already on the list, and I don't think Ayreon has influenced anybody. Gryphon are excellent, but maybe a bit niche for the Folk side of things.

OK, I agree with you that UZ is great and one of RIO's best representatives (as far as I have heard them). I see Radiohead as a prog-related Indie-band. Änglagård never really clicked with me.
I mentioned Traffic even though it is one of my favourite bands.

I wouldn't cross the street to insult Radiohead, let alone listen to them. And the list is quite flawed. I suggest a reworking of it. As for now, I couldn't be bothered and could much more easily get into March Madness (and I'm no college basketball fan).
