I still think this title is very silly and not necessary describing any genre

Prog is a genre. Tons of bands like IQ, The Flower Kings, etc. It's not progressive music, it's prog the genre.

I think you're generalizing. A small percentage of punk is insanely good music. Never generalize an entire genre because a 'genre' is just a descriptive word used to categorize music.

Exactly. And that dark prog is just one of its styles, an atmosphere... not even a sub-genre of Prog.

I didn't expect such a discussion to develop overnight. Of course I don't consider "dark prog" a genre of its own. I just used the term to get the message across and since it is very vague it allows people to suggest a lot (A LOT, indeed) of different bands. As someone already said, heavy does not equal dark of course (i.e. Rush, Dream Theater, the Power metal genre), even if the two categories often blur together. This brings even more variety to the table. And no, I'm not a psycho clown killer searching for glorification in the music I listen to , but that would make for an interesting concept album... Maybe...

Maybe I am Smurph, I just generalizing what I feel however I might be wrong and not heard most of it and which makes me in be wrong. I honestly doubt it tho', considering I favor memorable tunes not just strumming for the sake of it hugs tho'

We are not talking about Dark Prog as a genre. The OP asked for suggestions of progressive music that has a dark atmosphere. There is no-one discussing this as a genre or sub-genre other than you. We are just suggesting progressive rock bands that have a dark atmosphere irregardless of genre or sub-genre.

Out of curiosity, what did you think of the bands I linked to?

I'm listening to the three Virus' songs you linked right now. The Black Flux gets somewhat groovy in the middle, which I like, and Archives seems to be good with its kinda fast tempo. I listened to Spiderland one year or so ago but didn't like it, perhaps I should revise it because everyone seem to consider it crazy good. As for Russian Circles, I will lend 'em an ear when I have more time on my hands, I'll let you know later. Again, thanks everybody for the music you've suggested me, I hope this keeps growing (even if it means I'll spend all my life listening to them all ).

that name dark prog kills me! Even if cute snoopy Nogbad_The_Bad aka Atom heart Mother disagrees with me here! Common, dark prog, sounds like Halloween to me and we here don't even have or share this festivity

As "silly" as it may seem, it looks like it's a good excuse for sharing music. And if it actually does sound silly, then I don't mind listening to these "silly" things.
