The Spirit Carries On - probably the one song I'd want to play at my funeral. Comfortably Numb is good too but overrated

Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb. |

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night. |

You seem to have nailed just the oposite to my opinions about this bands and songs. I do love Dream Theater, but this particular song is rather forgettable for me. And even though there are many songs indeed that I love from DT, they just have not been able to do such a whole masterpiece album such as Pink Floyd have done at least 4 times (to my taste, at lest), plus most of their other albums are really good and they have very few songs that I would say I really dislike (which is not something I could say from DT). Of course, if DT kept their album shorter, leaving out the sub-par songs, they could just as well almost have a full discography of masterpieces, but then again, how to choose the best songs. Someone's favourite songs may just as well be another's forgettable ones. |

'The Spirit Carries On' is one of my favorites, and that seems to be the general consensus among Dream Theater fans. DT may not receive the general adoration that Pink Floyd does, but I think they're definitely a more consistently good band.

Yeah, sort of. It sounds like a track that might have been off The Wall, bit like One of My Turns (without the zany portion) or Nobody Home. Ruddess even plays an organ-like tone. Voted for Numb. In this case, the lyrics (and also Gilmour's singing vis a vis La Brie) seal the issue. The lyrics for Numb are simple but poignant, Waters tapping into his ability to come up with associations that everyone can relate to in some way or the other. DT's...well, would rather not comment. As such, Floyd just perform gently and steadily to make a haunting impression while DT make an impressive attempt to build up a crescendo but it doesn't touch me.

Easy choice. "The Spirit Carries On" is one of the songs that turned me off DT after thoroughly enjoying everything they'd done up to that point.
"Comfortably Numb" has been played to hell and back by FM radio, but it's a great song nonetheless. Edited by verslibre - August 21 2014 at 02:49 |

I had never heard the DT song so I checked it out and was astonished by how much the intro sounds like PF's Coming Back to Life and when the singing starts it's like they're trying to emulate something out of The Final Cut.
Another vote for CNumb. |

Both are amazing and terrific well-written songs. It's a joy to listen to them both. However, I give a slight edge to comfortably numb do to my tastes. Good poll. |
