I've always thought of these two songs being rather similar from Pink Floyd and Dream Theater respectively. Or at least, 'The Spirit Carries On' is to Dream Theater as 'Comfortably Numb' is to Pink Floyd. I'm a big fan of the DT song, especially the live versions I've seen/heard. The PF song is a good one, but it just doesn't hit me the same way. Thoughts?

I can guess now how this poll might turn out though. Ermm

Comfortably Numb... one of the greats of Pink Floyd. There are many songs I really love from Dream Theater, but "The Spirit Carries On" is not one of them. Not even close.

Not at all close in my opinion. Comfortably Numb by Eons

Both are amazing and terrific well-written songs. It's a joy to listen to them both.
However, I give a slight edge to comfortably numb do to my tastes.
Good poll.

I had never heard the DT song so I checked it out and was astonished by how much the intro sounds like PF's Coming Back to Life and when the singing starts it's like they're trying to emulate something out of The Final Cut.

Another vote for CNumb.

Easy choice. "The Spirit Carries On" is one of the songs that turned me off DT after thoroughly enjoying everything they'd done up to that point.

"Comfortably Numb" has been played to hell and back by FM radio, but it's a great song nonetheless.

Yeah, sort of.  It sounds like a track that might have been off The Wall, bit like One of My Turns (without the zany portion) or Nobody Home.  Ruddess even plays an organ-like tone.

Voted for Numb.  In this case, the lyrics (and also Gilmour's singing vis a vis La Brie) seal the issue. The lyrics for Numb are simple but poignant, Waters tapping into his ability to come up with associations that everyone can relate to in some way or the other.  DT's...well, would rather not comment.  As such, Floyd just perform gently and steadily to make a haunting impression while DT make an impressive attempt to build up a crescendo but it doesn't touch me.

'The Spirit Carries On' is one of my favorites, and that seems to be the general consensus among Dream Theater fans.  DT may not receive the general adoration that Pink Floyd does, but I think they're definitely a more consistently good band.
