To be fair you are not supposed to listen to it in an altered state of consciousness......that's cheating. I've always had trouble getting into Can and I have been listening to them on and off for 40 years.

It was very good actually, especially that 20 minute epic. I'll spin it tomorrow too Edited by Sagichim - May 18 2014 at 15:38 |

^ Ok you've made me take out my Future Days copy and give it a fresh new spin right now, I always had a problem liking a Can album as a whole.

Also news to me:-)
*grabs paper and pen* Do you know Prosper Tom? They made one album called 'Broken Door' and it is just stunning. Think Popol Vuh meets early Kraan and you're not that far off;-) |

And there's a Karoli album I have, he plays all the instruments (!) and has Polly Eltes on vocals. The only time I know of Polly's work was on Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain album. Karoli's album is more Ska than Kraut.
Also have a Irmin Schmidt album, a bit hit and miss though, I don't listen to it often. He has a Bruno Spoerri helping out on synths and lyricon. And of couse, a very cool album by Japanese vocalist Phew, backed by Jaki, Conrad Plank, and Holger. This is a fine post-punk, new-wave album, with Kraut elements. |

I've been asking about Jaki's musical endeavors post CAN before actually, this must be one of the few times I've seen any mention of them. Thanks man! Definitely noted:-) |

Still have a lot of time for Kraftwerk's debut album, up there with the best.
No one speaks of the band Jaki L played in after Can finished in the late-70's. Phatomband. Holger helped out on the first album, and Rosko Gee was bassist. The debut had Spacey Kraut elements, soul (!), electronic and funk. The last 2 albums had Sheldon Ancel on voice, kind of wacko and urgent in a Malcom Mooney sort of way. With spacey/punky elements. Worthwhile I say Edited by Tom Ozric - May 18 2014 at 06:14 |

Maybe it's because I, mainly, associate genuine Krautrock with improv and that Kosmische vibe.
Krautrock to me has become an umbrella term for 'psychedelic avantguarde music of an improvising nature'. I hear it in Djam Karet's 2013 'The Trip' as well, just like I know Pedro does. |

Page 7?!?!!!!
Ok what were we on about? Erm Scandinavian Krautrock sound. Erm yes that sounds preposterous, but there is some truth in that, although I highly suspect the bands in question would say otherwise. One of the first examples of this sound is probably International Harvester's Sov Gott, Rose Marie, where the band, after having attended a Terry Riley gig, incorporated tonal electronic experiments together with a strange kind of "rock" setting. |

Nice one Simon. I think you would appreciate the kind of thing I'm on about. I did a review stint a good while back, where I talked about this Nordic Krautrock sound. The bands I mentioned here are only a small part of it, but they showcase the style beautifully: you find this warped Nordic twist on folk alongside a willingness to partake in free associations. Throw some unhinged fusion, occasional flirts with electronics and an overpowering surge of psych into the mix, then you're almost there. |
