Hey, just wondering what everyone's favourite year for prog rock is, just the 70s in this case. I know it will be difficult poll so I've posted the top 10 albums of each year as rated on PA below...

1970: H To He, Who Am The Only One; Emerson, Lake & Palmer; If I Could Do It All Over Again...; Trespass; Third; Bitches Brew; Abraxas; Lizard; We'll Talk About It Later; The Least We Can Do Is Wave At Each Other.

1971: Fragile; Nursery Cryme; Pawn Hearts; Aqualung; Meddle; The Yes Album; In The Land Of Grey And Pink; The Inner Mounting Flame; Acquiring The Taste; Salisbury.

1972: Close To The Edge; Thick As A Brick; Foxtrot; Per Un Amico; Storia Di Un Minuto; Darwin!; Octopus; The Grand Wazoo; Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso; Space Shanty.

1973: Selling England By The Pound; Dark Side Of The Moon; Larks' Tongues In Aspic; Io Sono Nato Libero; Birds Of Fire; In A Glass House; Zarathustra; Hatfield And The North; Felona E Sorona; Spectrum.

1974: Red; Mirage (Camel); Relayer; Crime Of The Century; The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage; The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway; Rock Bottom; The Power And The Glory; You; Hamburger Concerto.

1975: Wish You Were Here; Godbluff; Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison; Ommadawn; The Snow Goose; Scheherazade And Other Stories; One Size Fits All; Free Hand; Rubycon; Voyage Of The Acolyte.

1976: Moonmadness; A Trick Of The Tail; Still Life (VDGG); Leftoverture, Romantic Warrior; Wind & Wuthering; 2112; In The Region Of The Summer Stars; Dawn; Viva Boma.

1977: Animals; A Farewell To Kings; Elegant Gypsy; Ocean; Songs From The Wood; Enigmatic Ocean; Mirage (Klaus Schulze); Point Of Know Return; Univers Zero 1313; Going For The One

1978: Hemispheres; Anabelas; SBB; Of Queues And Cures; 10,000 Anos Depois Entre Venus E Marte; U.K; X; Weidorje; What If; Heavy Horses.

1979: Spectral Mornings; Visitations; Joe's Garage, Act 1; Bla Vadrag; The Wall; Western Culture; Heresie; Mixtus Orbis; Svet Hledacu; One Of A Kind.

I'd probably go for 1974 myself, having "Pampered Menial" and "SABB" in addition to those listed (plus some live albums), but very much looking forward to what you guys put! Tongue

I could really vote for anything from 1970 to 1975.

1975, but all the years from 1970 to 1977 have seen excellent prog. Only 1979 was poor.

Close between the years '70 through '73.  Voted '71, though you haven't listed 1/10 the best albums of the year.

I do think Tales should be mentioned in 73---you can't get more prog than that--and it may be flawed masterpiece--but so are a lot of those on the list.

1973 is my favourite year but 1972 sure brought a lot of great RPI titles to the world.

I'll vote for 1972, but all years have good albums.
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

1977 has always been my favourite year for prog.  Take my favourite albums by Floyd, Yes and Genesis for starters.  Add to that classics by Klaus Schulze, Eloy, J-M Jarre and TD (Encore) plus another all-time top 10 album of mine in Black Noise by FM plus many others I've not mentioned and there you have it.

'72 might have more great albums, but I've always thought of '73 as the peak of rock music. The great albums from that year take things out of the stratosphere. '74 refines things even further in some ways though.

'72:

Foxtrot - Genesis
Octopus - Gentle Giant
Per Un Amico - Premiata Forneria Marconi
Three Friends - Gentle Giant
Light As a Feather - Return to Forever
Trilogy - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Grave New World - Strawbs

'73:

Selling England by the Pound - Genesis
Larks Tongues’ in Aspic - King Crimson
Ashes are Burning - Renaissance
Brain Salad Surgery - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Io Sono Nato Libero - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
In a Glass House - Gentle Giant

'74:

Red - King Crimson
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis
Mirage - Camel
Phaedra - Tangerine Dream
Red Queen to Gryphon Three - Gryphon
Eldorado - Electric Light Orchestra
Starless and Bible Black - King Crimson
