I can't believe no one's mentioned Camel yet. Here's my top ten.

I'm a Camel fan but I cannot get into their first album yet. I don't see why it's so special.
But I keep trying. Camel is one of my top favorite bands, or even the most favorite band (them or Yes).

Anyway, here's my top 10:

1. ELP - s/t (wow, it gets mentioned a lot; quite good!)
2. Pendragon - The Jewel
3. U.K.-U.K.
4. Kayak - See See The Sun
5. King Crimson - ITCOTCK
6. Bruford - Feels Good To Me
7. Yes - s/t
8. Procol Harum - s/t
9. Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant
10.Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Darn it forgot about UKCool

You are forgiven (There are so many brilliant 'one off' RPI albums it's hard to keep track)

True! I could have mentioned Il Paese Dei Balocchi, Locanda Delle Fate etc. as well.
But Maxophone is the best of them, as you are most certainly ready to admit, I think.

I would put ELP's debut near the top of the list. In fact I might even prefer it to ITCOTCK. Also, I am very fond of Gentle Giant's debut which I think is very, very under rated. Echolyn's self titled debut album is also under rated(even though it has a rather crappy drum sound). Also, Porcupine Tree's debut is very good and so is "The Flower King" if you can consider that a debut. :D

Good list.....I love all the early proto prog debuts and there are a lot of good ones.
Cressida, Spring, Fantasy, Rare Bird, etc..
But I never really cared for the Greenwood lp ; based on his playing with Khan I expected something more.

I was soooo looking forward to the Greenwood album, based on his efforts in Khan, and got a shock initially, but came around to it. It's more like a blusier, lesser Crazy World of Arthur Brown album....

Most of my favourite bands didn't hit the ground running and their début albums were by far exceeded by their later releases... they just got better.

So my list is short...

1. The Enid - In The Region Of The Summer Stars

2. Opeth - Orchid

3. Secret Green - To Wake The King

4. Seventh Wave - Things To Come

5. Renaissance - Renaissance
