Coltrane and Mingus are not 'progressive rock', they are jazz...period......and the under title of PA is your ultimate prog rock resource.
But by all means carry on.

Yes. I know, but, I did title the thread Your Favorite....., so, I'm ok with having everyone post their favorite prog pieces as they see fit (fingers crossed very tightly).

This took me the better part of four hours to do somewhat properly. Quite interesting, really!

Looking forward to it.

The amount of personal favorites I had to leave off is criminal: no "Dark Side of the Moon" tracks, "Thick as a Brick" , "The Lamb Lies Down...." tracks.....I could go on and on.......but, the point is to narrow the list down to specific songs by a specific year, so, playing editor on one's musical favorites can be quite difficult.

My dad was five in 1945. In 1959, the first song in this list, he was 19 thinking Cliff Richard was the coolest thing to emerge from these shores.

Prog in 1959?Confused

Such is the lunacy of adding all albums by anyone who made a remotely progressive album.

I agree that adding all albums by an artist who released only a few prog or prog-related albums (The Beatles, Miles Davis, etcetera) could be seen as servicing the tangential a bit too much. But, the other side of the coin is making this the site that prog completist's (alas, I am one of them....heh!) will consider, well, the most complete.

^ Heh... cheated a little. It was re-released in '96 on Lather. I have it on Studio Tan but the last 20 years are pretty sparse so I reached back where I could. If nothing else this list shows me where I need to focus some attention (as if I didn't know).

I just noticed I have no Genesis. That's wrong.

I see some mistakes though, BBT was 2012... I'll have to go back in there...

Conspiculously absent from my list:

Rush - I don't know why but they just don't interest me.

Zappa - Need to delve into his universe at some future point.

Univers Zero - I really like some of Art Zoyd's pieces so I need to look into getting my ears wrapped around some of this bands stuff.

Iron Maiden - Don't care for metal much.

Dream Theater - Don't care for metal much.

VDGG - Only heard a few things by them but seemed too dark for my tastes.

Marillion - Never seemed to hear anything by these guys for some reason.

Conspicuious by their showing up on several lists:

1969: King Crimson "21st Century Schizoid Man" - From the whole genre of prog this could well be the single track that most people enjoy the most.

1974: Various tracks from Crimso's "Red". I didn't realize until reading the replies that "Lamb Lies Down...." was released the same year.

Nice to see:

Some of the early Moody Blues stuff.

Dead Can Dance

Grateful Dead

Mike Oldfield

Supertramp

Yup, Lather...that's what I thought you did Wink

I remember in the early 90's when "Progressive Records" & "Musea" started releasing old classic vinyl prog on CD I wasn't sure whether to list them by CD release date or original vinyl release date in my database.  I decided on vinyl original release date and my count of 70's albums went through the roof!

Considering there were some sparse years in prog (or at least in my collection), I went ahead and expanded to prog-related music. And I was a Grateful Dead fan before I got into prog anyway. Smile

Quite good isn't it? Even the whole album. Good to see I'm not the only one who added it.

Quite good isn't it? Even the whole album. Good to see I'm not the only one who added it.

Very good album, certainly the best from Maiden that I've got. Admittedly though, my 80's selection is distinctly sparse and the only other studio album I have from 88 is Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking. I was slightly tempted to put Ted, Just Admit It on the list regardless of the complete lack of prog in their music.
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005
