judging by that sample this is related to prog-related, so you know what that means...

And the latest update is that the Pushing Rope project has been officially put to bed (but apparently the band have decided to continue on under another name since they have written nearly a complete disc worth of really spiffy music), that 41Point9 themselves are still going strong, they have definitely signed to Melodic Revolution Records (December 2013), who have re-released (as digital only) the first album 'Still Looking For The Answers', and will be releasing their sophomore album 'Mr. Astute Trousers' sometime later this year.
For the new album the band once again features Brian Cline (vocals), Bob Madsen (bass and assorted noises) and Kenny Steel (guitars) - and just like their previous effort, it will feature special guests. A track called 'The Marine' from the new album was released in early February (part of the proceeds from the sale of this song will be earmarked for the Wounded Warrior Project): http://melodicrevolutionrecords.com/track/the-marine, and a single is due for release on Tuesday next week called 'Confessions At Midnight'. This Friday on AiiRadio.net (28thFeb - show starts at 8pmUK, 3pmEST, 12noonPST on "T.G.I.Friday"): Join Kat Webb (aka AiiR_SkiBlu) as she chats live to Bob Madsen from 41Point9 and plays their brand new single "Confessions at Midnight" (to be released 4th March). This is a real "Ear Worm" track that you don't want to miss! Be one of the first to listen!

^ Many thanks for checking up on this, Scott.
I can't imagine this getting approval in Eclectic, anyway - it certainly isn't what I understand as Eclectic prog. It's still more Crossover prog than anything for me, but the band was well and truly rejected there, and there are comments in this thread suggesting that the music is too complex for that sub...yet at the same time there are also suggestions that they could be accomodated in PR. You are certainly right on the money when you say that prog-related was basically shot down because of the "influential" portion of the definition - whilst some of those involved here are well-respected musicians from existing established prog acts, the band itself is hardly a household name, and gets little airplay even on the specialist Internet radio prog stations. I guess 41point9 are fated to drift of into obscurity - I doubt very much that there will be a follow-up, since even the 'Pushing Rope' project that has been spawned as an offshoot seems to have stalled (temporarily hopefully) due to more pressing commitments of a key member of that band (Tony Carey). A great shame imho, but there we are.

41Point9 were rejected by Crossover and by Heavy. Heavy voted move and discussed sending them to Neo or prog-related. I think prog-related was basically shot down because of the "influential" portion of the definition. A topic search in Eclectic did not bring them up, so it does not appear that they were evaluated by Eclectic.

Yeah, it's just a figure of speech, Iván. I used it to express the feeling I get that a hell of a lot of people apparently hear this album as prog - it's not an accurate estimate by any means, and yes - you can certainly find alternative views out there if you look for them.
The problem is that 41point9's music is highly melodic, and a shade on the lightweight side too, & these two aspects are becoming more and more dissociated from what is generally regarded as prog by the real diehard "old school" bretheren amongst us. As far as I can make out though, this music is far too complex in structure to be written off as prog related pop as proggnosis seem to have done. Whatever the case, they aren't going to be added here any time soon, so it's all a bit academic really. Syn-Phonic Music (Greg Walker) is a well-regarded source of all things 'prog' on here (http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=43976), and his take on the matter is "Like a cross between Marillion, Spock’s Beard and Kansas": http://synphonic.8m.com/country/usa.htm. That'll certainly do for me...

I honestly don't know what you call 99.5 of the developed world Yam Yam Proggnosis
Dangerdog Music Reviews:
At a first listen I believed they were really Prog, but in following listens, found it more and more diluted. Now, I'm not sure...But to say that 99.5% of the people consider them Prog, is not very accurate: Iván |

Amen to THAT!
Trouble is there's nothing new been released, and although the first album is regarded as prog by about 99.5% of the developed World, I don't suppose anyone on here will reconsider them without fresh material being made available (rules being rules and all that). And, to cast yet further clouds on the horizon, this was posted on their facebook page back in July of this year: "Big News For 41POINT9! For the time being 41POINT9 will be taking a hiatus due to work requirements for the band members. We hope to be back in the saddle by early next year. In the meantime, I have started a new band with Kenny Steel, Jay Tausig and Tony Carey. Yes, you heard me right, Tony Carey of Rainbow, Planet P, and numerous hit records as a solo artist here and abroad! This is way frigging... cool and the fanboy in me is dancing the Macarena right now. Tony has been one of my favorite singers/songwriters and keyboard players for years and the opportunity to work with him is a dream come true. (man he's gonna rib me on this one for a while) The Name of the band is "Pushing Rope" and we hope to have our first digital release for your pleasure in a few months. Stay tuned for more information as it develops. (I think I'm gonna go join that inner fanboy and get jiggy wit it!)" Note: This is NOT the punk bluegrass 'Pushing Rope' from the USA, but this one: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pushing-Rope/197313927095134. However, they too have had to put things back somewhat regarding some new material to listen to - this from a week ago (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pushing-Rope/197313927095134): "Unfortunately, the Pushing Rope debut has been pushed off a bit in order to give Tony a bit more time with his newest Planet P release, the G.O.D boxset. (available for pre order now at truebeliever.de I think) We are going to instead shoot for early 2014 to release the first round of Pushing Rope material. This also means that we are going to have a bit more time to get the material just as progginly kick ass as possible! Stay tuned!" I believe they are going to be handled by Melodic Revolution Records, who don't seem to have a tremendous success rate when it comes to getting bands added in PA...but we'll see when the time comes... |

I honestly believe that Eclectic is the only solution, too complex for Crossover.

These guys have been put on hold while we go through our current "New" list.
About Townscream, they're currently being eval'd by the Eclectic team, who has a pretty extensive back log. And of couse SOTE has been added. The Unspecified Genre has been discussed before, although I don't remember specifically where it went; just that it didn't go anywhere fast. And nice play on words there

So...what now?
41Point9
That's a lot of red 'x's in there... 'Not Otherwise Specified' were cleared recently in Heavy Prog after more than 6 months of being shunted back and forth - can 41Point9's case be resolved somehow with sufficient endeavour and determination too? There was also the issue of 'Townscream', back in November, which never got a resolution as far as I can see: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=82722 (it disolved into a far more general discussion about sub genres eventually, and it seems the band themselves kinda got forgotten about in the ensuing melee...) And doubtless people who've been on here a few years could dig up plenty of others - like when Olav (Windhawk) dropped this little beauty into the 'Not Otherwise Specified' thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=78699&PID=4352523#4352523 (happily it has since succesfully resolved!) Maybe it's time we had a place to put these bands that 'don't fit', after they've seemingly exhausted all possibilities with the sub genres that we have already, and have been left in limbo for a certain period of time? 'Unidentified Prog' or something along those lines. On the other hand - maybe we should just bung them all in Avant...insomuch as we 'avant got a flippin' clue where else to put them!!

HolyGod!!!!!!, this is a damn hard mix.
I find: 1.- Fusion 2.- Hard Rock 3.- Some sort of Industrial feeling 4.- A bit of Electronic It's hard to place them, probably Fusion. Prog of course, as a fact excellent music, but not Symphonic Iván |

It is simply mind-boggling that we still don't have this band in our archives.
From their facebook wall (5th Jan 2012): http://www.facebook.com/#!/41POINT9 -
"Wow! so at last count 41POINT9 has been included in no less than 9 different "BEST OF 2011" radio shows, reviewer's favorites and compilations. Thanks so much for everyone that voted for us, bought the record and recommended us to their friends. Stay tuned for 2012 ..its gonna be wild ride with lots of new music, videos and perhaps, just maybe, some live performances somewhere. :-) ~ Bob" And, (1st December 2011): "Hey everyone! This is really cool, so far we have found out that we are going to be played on at least three best of 2011 prog shows. There may be more but i have heard of at least three. Jeff Collins at Sunshine FM, Tony Romero @ AIIR radio and Paul Demers at Pollywogs progcast all included 41POINT9 as one of the best releases of 2011. With all the incredible music released this year, this is a really big honor for us and we are humbly grateful! Thanks everyone! ` bob" At least someone of influence out there in the prog world accepts them into the genre.

Their album is really good. I enjoyed reading the liner notes too. The story behind the album cover was pretty hilarious. My thought was that their best location was crossover, but crossover rejected them, so I am guessing that they aren't going to be included at this time. It looks as though Heavy Prog was leaning towards rejecting them too. Maybe a move to Neo, but I don't think that is a good fit either. Maybe they will have future releases that might make them more qualified to be added. Either way, I did really enjoy this album and it is worth checking out by those who like crossover type prog.

Speaking on behalf of the Symphonic Team this band has a snowball's chance in hell of getting added to that genre.
Its not a Symph sound really. But very much like heavy prog. Hope they get in somewhere cos its porg... er prog.

Still no 41POINT9 in the Archives even when the question was raised months ago??
I agree they are pretty hard to categorize within prog's sub-genres, but they are prog nevertheless.
I got their CD "Still Looking For The Answers" (Progrock Records, 2011) yesterday. Sounds very much like Spock's Beard to me, especially for the vocals, but with less eclectic compositions. My suggestion is Prog-Related (a cruel compromise perhaps...).
