A lot of reviews on the front page are way over the top. 5 has gone the way of the lire and is subject to great inflation.Post drama yes albums by comparison fare badly with the golden era up to Drama. But lets imagine if yes began their career with 90521 how would we then rate them as a band? How would we compare them to other bands formed since then eg marillion IQ dream theatre Porcupine tree etc?

Would any of the post Drama albums get a 5 when compared to all the Favourite band 5's?

With no earlier reference perhaps the following ratings

90521  ***and a half

Big Generator***

ABWH ****

ABWH live ***** ( should not be here as it contains pre 81 music)

Union **and a half

Talk*** and a half

KTA studio ****

Open Your Eyes ***

Magnification ****

How do these Albums rate against your favourites. Remember Yes pre 81 don't exist for the sake of this argument

The Ladder is Yes's best post-81 studio album, imo.

How would you compare it to other post 81 bands? Obviously Yes would not be held in such awe but what reputation would they have based on this body of work?

I don't think they'd be held so high.

If they were only 81-onward, this would be my opinion:

The Ladder would probably be their only true stand-out album, probably regarded as the album that "broke the mold" from their pop-prog "roots", while Magnification would probably be looked at as trying too hard.

I think they would be looked at as a quasi-prog breed, in the likes of classic supertramp, journey, queen, roxy music, or better yet like Asia

I disagree.

I don't like Drama, and I think 90125 is much better. I think Big Generator is not as good, that ABWH is great, that Union is a joke, that Talk is disappointing, that Keys To Ascension has great livetracks and not so good studiotracks, that The Ladder is not very good, that Open Your Eyes... no comment, that Magnification doesn't deserve 4 stars, so there you have it!

Well, I think that opinions are like... tongues. Everybody has one (well almost), and everyone is acquiring a different taste.

If I would discover Yes after 1981, I would still think the same. That 90125 and ABWH are sensational and that the rest don't come close to those albums.

My mind wouldn't alter also. I like 90125, ABWH, Magnification, Keys and some of The Ladder.
I knew and loved ABWH and 90125 before I knew CTTE, Relayer and the other pre 80's material.

You mean if the band had been called Cinema for 90125, with no previous history?  I think they would have been considered as patchy, inconsistant and lacking a general direction (or 'progression' from album to album.

For what its worth, I think 'Talk' is very much underrated, and I like the studio tracks off Keys I.  90125 is a good 'AOR/ Art Rock' album, BG & The Ladder are patchy.

Well, if you approach every album as a whole new thing and don't compare it to others then you should treat that Yes that way.

This is not a very good thread, because there are at least 10 good Neo-Prog bands out there and a lot of fans who feel this thread is an insult to their musical tastes!!

You are surely having a very serious laugh ;The Ladder is everything that was dire about Yes,(Homeworld) apart it is a very poor offering in my opinion.ABWH is vastly superior and is proper Yes music.Magnification was very close to being a very good Yes album

I really like KeyStudio and Magnification.  The rest seems rather boring and dull to me.  I think Yes might have been a one hit wonder had it not been for their 70s material.

this is rediculous.

you can't judge a band's work ignoring their best work you have too look at it as a whole.

of course yes doesnt stand up when you take away their countless mindblowing albums of the 70's.  give em a break all bands suck aftre their prime.
