I started a poll a couple days ago on French bands and I'm really surprised by the response...both in terms of the number of votes cast and the list of other French bands people have been mentioning.  I expected to see maybe 20 votes and a single page of comments and instead, we're over 50 votes and 3 pages of comments so far.  This has me wondering something...

Why does PA have a sub-genre for Italian bands (RPI) but not one for French bands?  It seems kind of odd to me that the French bands are all split up into sub-genres like eclectic, symphonic, zeuhl, RIO, etc...whereas the Italian bands are all lumped together.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Hello Mr King!

The proper Italian stuff has some particular characteristics that define it. Frequent classical and cultural influences, often gothic elements, perhaps wild/reckless/daring experimentation, vocals that properly weave through the music (not merely `vocals sung in Italian') that are as much of a `musical equipment' as the actual instruments are just some of the characteristics.

Despite how popular they are, you won't find a lot of those elements in a band like PFM, despite them being one of the signature Italian bands. They incorporate a lot of English prog influences. Off the top of my head, bands such as Banco, Rockys Filj, etc are much better and specifically unique examples.

You'll notice as well that there's plenty of Italian bands that are NOT specifically RPI. In other words, just because a band is Italian does not default it to RPI. Off the top of my head, recent additions such as Oxhuitza, or bands such as Yleclipse are not labelled as RPI, despite originating from Italy.

Edit: as Michael said, less than half of the Italian artists listed on PA are in RPI.

Sorry for my terse reply, Michael, but this RPI argument is so old now. And there are plenty of threads on French vs. Italian Prog. If the OP is interested in these debates he might also try searching for Prog Andaluz.

Oh, no, Chris, I didn't think anything of it! I was more annoyed because I remember a few months back in the Italian Den I had a pretty successful ranting grumble about this very thing, and my thoughts/opinions came together pretty well then, less so this time!

If I knew exactly when it was, I would have scrolled back through the pages of the Den posts and copy/pasted it, but it could be anywhere!

We have Zeuhl, which is for the most part a French-Japanese entre-deux .

Thanks for the info everyone...and your ramblings were helpful Michael Wink

I just ran some queries on the PA database and found about 25% of the Italian bands in my collection aren't RPI, so now that genre makes more sense to me.  I was disappointed that there were no RPI bands from France or Krautrock bands from Italy...though I did find Krautrock bands from both France & Belgium LOL
