Beach Boys is great (almost proto-prog at times)

There's a lot of music I like that is generally considered 'uncool'...
I love Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Goo Goo Dolls, Jean Michel Jarre, The Cars, Tears For Fears, Phil Collins, Kitaro, Clannad, Enya... I also like some modern pop artists like Lana Del Rey, The Corrs... I love a lot of J-pop, K-pop and C-pop as well.
All of the above bands/singers are frequently criticized and made fun of by the media and people that I meet.
It doesn't bother me that most people think these artists are uncool... I just listen to what I like. Why spend your life denying who you are just because other people don't approve of it?
The most important thing is to be honest and true to yourself.

Most prog fans seem to dislike metal? Where did you get that idea?

It's true, many prog fans (not "most") dislike metal.. It's just that the ones who actually do like metal are usually very loud people.

I like Heavy Metal as long as it isn't Black Metal, Mathcore, Grunge Rock, or Post-Grunge. I'll explain why.
The reason for my dislike of Black Metal is because the bands they are a bit too Anti-Religious with their lyrics.
For Mathcore it's because The Vocals are WAY too loud and the Instrumentation is a bit sloppy IMHO.
For Grunge Rock it's because of the "I hate my parents, I hate the world" kind of attitude in the lyrics, Which I can't stand and I could never relate to the songs.
And for Post-Grunge although the Lyrics are better it's still mostly boring to my ears and too Mainstream.

I need a list of bands 'that prog fans generally hate'....before I can even give an answer. I have a pretty extensive prog collection yet I still like many pop, rock, country rock, and alt- indie bands.

Not sure that they're hated in prog circles, but quite a few non-prog bands/artists that I love:
Alice In Chains Soundgarden (proggy at times and also the greatest band, ever) Nirvana Stone Temple Pilots Foo Fighters Silverchair System Of A Down Deftones Dethklok (Yeah, I know it's a fictional band, but I like the music)
I even enjoy certain video game music, mainly from the original Mega Man and X series'.

Well, I've got to admit that I don't usually feel very uncomfortable with anti-religious lyrics I agree with you about mathcore, and that is a problem I also find in other "-cores" such as deathcore. I really prefer the slower, more mature brutality of death metal. I really don't consider grunge a metal genre, but everything you say about it is true. I also find it really difficult to relate to.

I also enjoy some 30 Seconds to Mars (I'm not a fan at all though). I've been enjoying their last album, it has some nice symphonic and proggy moments (wether they ARE prog is a whole nother thing). I've come to realize that 30STM are a good band with an awful singer who writes awful lyrics.
Oh, and this is not a band, but I also like the song that was released last year by a pretty well known band and got lots of hate, whatsitsname, Un... Uns... Unsus... Oh nevermind, I can't remember.

Oops ... used a wrong word. ... Many prog fans dislike metal ... I believe we are talking prog and non-prog put together. As per the high volume issue, you have to be loud. That's just how it rolls on the concerts, especially in large venues ... unless I'm missing something. I thought volume helps you feel the tone of the guitar, no?

I can't stand post-grunge's lyrics or chord structure (verse chorus, power chords for the whole song with maybe an intro riff), it's pretty much devolved into cock rock lyrics or the whining you described in grunge. Grunge's lyrics tend to have more of a 'word salad' style (nirvana, soundgarden) and more complex instrumentation make it better than post-grunge for me. Meh, I've been listening to black metal for like 7 years, and the anti-religious lyrics never got to me, but that's probably because I'm an athiest and i'm still not great and deciphering the shrieks. With most black metal bands (Except for certain members of the norweigan 2nd wave, e.g. mayhem, burzum) the imagery and lyrics are intentionally over the top and for show. The raw production and sometimes simple structure of the songs could get to some prog fans I suppose, though some bands like enslaved, deathspell omega, sigh and blut aus nord are quite proggy and have good production. For me I guess it would maybe be some of the more underground rap I tend to listen to like Immortal technique, deltron 3030 and MC chris. Also, prog fans hate metal? Weird, because I would think there would be a large ammount of crossover from both to each other. I mean, they're both genres that started from rock but have grown to something somewhat apart from it, both have an emphasis on virtuosity and riffwork, a penchant for unconventional song structures and lyrical content different from the popular norm. Now, do prog fans hate the more underground metal or just the more mainstream, poppier stuff like say, disturbed, korn, avenged sevenfold, asking alexandria? Cause I like prog (haven't dug hugely into it) and have listened to a massive ammount of metal, and I like them for a lot of the same reasons.
