Black Sabbath by a long long long way. Procol Harum wasn't responsible for inpiring much at all as opposed to Sabbath who single handedly changed the face of a great deal of music forever.

Making this choice is so tough...having to leave one or the other out is just wrong...but...I love Procol Harum and think they've had more high quality albums than Sabbath and have been more consistent over their recording career, but the first 5 Sabbath albums were the blueprint for my favorite metal genre, doom, so I have to go with them.
"Whiter Shade of Pale" vs "War Pigs", "Home" vs "Volume 4", Gary Brooker vs Ozzy, Robin Trower vs Tony Iommi...even though I can't stand any Sabbath after Ozzy left; for me, Sabbath still wins them all.

For me Procul Harum has higher highs and lower lows but I think they still get my vote.

I shouldn't really vote here but I do anyway. I completely love "A Whiter Shade of Pale", other than that I've heard some average songs here and there and the only album I own from PH, the masterful "Something Magic", not a single weak song on there. Especially the story of the Worm and the Tree is of course shining a light on something that Sabbath never really got around to do. I guess major concepts weren't their strength (which is strange considering the incredible lyricists they had). The closest Sabbath got to something similar would be albums like "Seventh Star" and "TYR" I guess, but they are far from concept albums imo, more of very coherent albums theme-wise.
Anyway, I own and love every single Black Sabbath album released to date and could speak (or write) of my love for them for hours and hours, so they win without any doubt.

I like Procol more than Sabbath but imo its an unusal pair for comparison.
They are so different that it's hard to even compare them.
btw ..I have noticed some really bizarre groupings like this here on other threads....

Just how utterly ridiculous do these comparison polls have to be before some common sense kicks in/prevails?
Even if this were in the Off at Tangents Thread it would be considered frivolous (and that takes some doing) I like both bands. I also like foodstuffs that are sweet and sour. I like cats and dogs. I like women with short hair and long hair. I like many things that are completely unrelated to other things (but I ain't gonna start a poll about it) Enough already...desist you silly fellow |

Someone needs to go back to prog rock school. Procol Harum were the pioneers of prog rock, my friend. Remember, they had 3 albums out before Yes, King Crimson, and all these other prog bands even existed! Peter Gabriel and many other famous prog rockers have cited Procol Harum as a huge influence. Their first album came out in 1967, for Pete's sake. |
