Individuals are the arbiter of what offends them, and statements of "shoulds" and rights in the matter makes no difference to that.
The first proposition implies the second, necessarily and by definition. The second proposition can remain unspoken and its meaning still be ascertained adequately by the listener. |

What do you mean? Like, they can't think for themselves?

Please explain how. The word 'ignorant' can be used into two contexts. a) Lacking awareness or knowledge in general b) Lacking knowledge or awareness about something in particular. When it is said that a comment comes from ignorance and it can be reasonably inferred from the context of the conversation that ignorance here refers to ignorance about something specific, would it still follow that the person had been called ignorant in a general sense? |

I'm really tired of your snipy attitude. Is there some moderator I should contact or is Dean the exemplar of moderator attitudes around here? |

Gee, thanks for the support.
/edit: btw - I don't moderate here - I removed the words "Forum Moderator" from my title several months ago because basically I'm crap at it and I gain no enjoyment from chastising adults for behaving like children. Edited by Dean - March 02 2013 at 13:38 |

That's what I said didn't I?
Yes and No. The "from ignorance" comes from "argument from ignorance" - a fallacy of informal logic - in the context it is used it means that the person who made the original comment was ignorant of all the facts necessary to make the comment - that is not the same as being called ignorant in the general sense. Many audiophilists claims are made from ignorance, (of the technical details necessary to make those claims), but those people are far from ignorant (in general terms) ergo they are not ignoramuses.

Well I am here but I am struggling to know what your complaint is. Looks like I am ignorant of the offence. |

Interesting. Presumably you are referring to Manhatten Project. In what way do you find the lyrics offensive? Edited by Tony R - March 02 2013 at 16:37 |

How can you respect the fact that he is offended by the song without knowing why he's offended? Of course you might just be trying to make a point but I suggest you do that more maturely in future. |

You make a good point and maturity is not my forte. It was knee jerk reaction I admit . I just found it a strange comment. I respect people that are offended by the song why should I respect that?

'Manhattan Project' ?? It is clearly not supportive of the experiments and attitudes of the atomic era, and turns a suspicious eye toward those who thought building a doomsday device was wise.
This is the 'Suicide Solution' complex, where a song that is commenting on - even criticizing - a subject is misunderstood to be provocative. |

Irony and sarcasm in lyrics are too often lost on people. Sadly.

I've seen some pretty nasty debates about Maynard James Keenan's lyrics on Youtube.
