There's one on youtube, but it's absolutely terrible. Every time they get to one of the instructions (like "insert peanuts" or "tune uke"), they pause the whole song to follow the instructions. That is contrary to the spirit of the piece, it must be performed continuously, with the chaos going on as the piece is being played. Maybe I'll try to do a recording

I can give you hundred oposite examples of incredible imrovised songs vs. sh*ty prog songs, does it mean that I think improvisation is better than studio tracks? No. If you don't like improvised stuff that's ok, I respect that, there are people who can't listen to live concerts that's ok too. Don't mix your personal tastes with facts.
I happen to love Moonchild, I don't know I just love it. Am I wrong? Do I like crapy music? (Please don't answer that)
|
I love "Moonchild" as well, and all of it. if you listen closely you can find every line of the lyrics in the improvisational part at the end. the most obvious lines you can hear are "dropping cricle stones on a sundial" and "playing hide and seek with the ghosts of dawn". but they are all there. by the way: most classical composers were famous for their improvisations. there are a lot of stories about Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, to name but a few, that show their exceptional improvisational skills. if you know about music history then you know that this strict "playing only what is written" approach in classical music comes from the Romantic era and its genius cult. there are tendencies in the modern interpretation of classical music that bring back improvisation, and I absolutely appreciate it. did you know that Johann Sebastian Bach could improvise four- and five-voiced fugues? and fugues are the most complex compositions there are. the raga music of India, by the way, is mostly improvised. and any musicologist worth his or her salt will tell you that this music is as complex as the Western classical music. jazz music relies a lot on improvisation, and most jazz musicians adore Bach, who arguably wrote the most complex compositions in Western music ever. why do you think that is the case? because the melodic lines of Bach, although composed, have a fresh and improvisational feel to them. I play piano myself, and I absolutely adore Bach for this

I am no musicologist but I am Indian and yes, it IS improvised and it is more melodically intricate than Western music, though it has practically no harmony to speak of.

yes, the complexity of Indian music does not lie in harmony or even polyphony. but the melodic and rhythmic lines and patterns are much more complex than those of Western music

Two great albums here. While I generally prefer King Crimson over Yes, Close to the Edge takes the cake for me. Like many have said, there's not a weak moment on the album to speak of.

Although I prefer KC's sound especially around the Red era, CTTE has not a single weak moment, one of the very few albums that shines through every moment.
Red has Providence.

Without Providence, Starless wouldn't work properly. I prefer Red.

Providence is a monster, and is imo better than any CttE tracks, in the context of the album or out of it.

It is a difficult poll. I love Red, but I do think that Providence is about the weakest of the KC improv pieces (I love Moonchild). CTTE is nigh on perfect, so that gets the vote.

^ ... and as I much as I like "Providence", there's no way it could perform as a giant-slayer to all three tracks.

Pure quality-wise, it cannot. But I don't care for objective quality when I'm listening to music. I'm sorry if I broke some sacred rule not to compare Providence to CttE tracks, but I can't help it.

Love both albums, obviously, but Starless is one of my all-time favorite prog epics, and I just love the rest of the songs on it (well, Providence a bit less). So Red it is.

I know I didn't. Maybe ludicrous, but still an opinion, and still as valid as anyone else's opinion.
