I thought that this must have been discussed before so I did a forum search on "Gallery" in the topic subject, but besides the obvious many threads about Shadow Gallery it returned only a couple of old threads proposing people to post pictures of Prog Bands.

Because the file manager has limited size, pictures in forum threads get eventually deleted or the thread sinks into oblivion.

Has it ever been considered to have a permanent section in PA for a Prog Pictures Gallery?

I guess that a concern might be having to constantly battle with copyrights? (people adding pictures without knowing that they are copyrighted and then having the copyright owner requesting the pic to be deleted or even claiming for compensations?).

It's a good idea - I like it. To avoid copywrong issues we could confine it to pictures taken by site members.

And my pic of Steve Hackett certainly uses up valuable space on my filemanager allocation and was probably seen by 3 people in total:

Nice pic indeed. The confinement to pics taken by members would be a real pity though. Can't the issue be worked around by some disclaimer saying that if any © owner wishes to have the pic removed he just has to say so? I think I have seen similar statements in other sites.

The idea came when I posted a couple of pics of the Tarkus 'creature' ELP used on stage on Richard (richardh)'s thread about Greg Lake's recent concert review. I know he is an ELP fan so I was surprised when he said that he had never seen a pic of the creature before.
We would never be able to share these kind of historically interesting pictures in that case. Few member were around with a camera in the classic Prog period (not to mention that cameras were often forbidden in the venues for the normal audience) so a lot of historical pictures would be missed and we would get a Gallery mainly full of only contemporary bands (nothing against them of course).

I hope space in server wouldn't be an issue? (plenty of websites with extensive galleries all over the place)

I don't know for others but in my case, knowing how the band looks (looked) like gives a more complete dimension when hearing their music. Sometimes I listen to a band and I have no idea how they looked like and I feel a sense of incompleteness.

Seeing as this seems to have become the permanent prog pictures thread, I've moved this to Prog Music Lounge, as that seems to be the best station. I've also stickied it, making it even more permanent.

That's nice Andy, but it's still a forum thread, because of the file manager size limit pictures posted here will not stay for very long Unhappy

Upload your pictures to a hosting site such as imgur if you're afraid of the size limit.

As I said the original idea for this thread came from posting some pictures of the Tarkus 'creature' which ELP featured on stage in the early 70's, so here they are for posterity Tongue

This must have been the first version, a rather poor rendition and the head looks to me more like a sweet and friendly kangaroo than a killer armadillo LOL

They developed a more refined version, the head and eyes looked more menacing, the side guns are also much better. This one was "driven" by a roadie concealed inside it, it released smoke and fired a charge of polystyrene snow. A pic of it releasing smoke, another one of the thing being repaired, and an article about it.

and to put an end to it, a Lego Tarkus Tongue
