King Crimson, who have made one of my favorite albums (Larks' Tongues in Aspic), several great ones (In the Court of the Crimson King, Islands, Red, Discipline) and a good number great songs on the albums I don't like as much.I haven't listened to any of their post-80s output, however. As for Rush, I only ever bought four of their albums (2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures). They all have their good aspects, but only Moving Pictures would I consider great. They strike me as a band who embellish very simple songs with very complex arrangements, which can make for some supremely catchy songs when it works well and sound kind of strange when it doesn't. I like all the individual sub-songs in "2112", but they don't have enough of a grandiose feel to form a particularly convincing suite. Oh, and a lot of their lyrics on those late-70s albums are supremely awful. Then again, the same holds true for many King Crimson lyrics.
Are you just waiting for yourself to grow so that you would no longer dig things like Discipline? Get it now. ... Please ... S'il vous plait.
I don't understand what you're talking about.
Sorry, I meant "grow old". My fingers can't always keep up with my brain. Get a taste of Discipline now before you lose that opportunity. Isn't taste age-dependent?

But I have already heard Discipline, as I have said in my post.

Some bands make amazing music with basic equipment, some bands make terrible music with very high-end equipment. Rush are not the only band to choose to stick to a more basic set-up, and I don't see why they should be given special attention for doing so. If anyone deserves mention for something like that I would nominate The Doors. Some of the most inventive and unique compositions and with just a keyboards, drums, guitar and vocal set up.

iirc yes, when i first got into prog i remember finding a story about how for their first time in the states they opened for a Sabbath tour and constantly got terrible reception because it was all drunken metal fans going "wtf is this? why is that guy tuning his violin? is this Sabbath? I want metal!"

I just made a major discovery about the Rush vs. King Crimson battle here on PA, I found that after the first 2 Rush albums(which don't really get much love here on PA) even though I find them excellent releases but not 5 stars by any stretch. The majority of people here on PA like Rush's music moreShockedShocked. You guys might say oh it's because they're more accessible(I don't think that that matters because Prog Rock is still pretty darn complex and the average person doesn't understand it) but the people's overall opinion matters most and they have rated Rush music a little bit betterShocked. Rush's music can stand with any King Crimson record, believe thatShockedShocked

Don't say that "ohh" King Crimson is not accessible, that's bullsh*t because in the end it's all Prog.

Why are you trying to prove Rush is a better band than King Crimson? Quite different bands that shouldn't really be compared.

and as far as the ratings on this site, I will bring up the accessibility thing because that's simply the main reason. Rush is much more well known so there would be a lot more people going to rate their albums and they tend to have very die-hard fanatic listeners.

King Crimson wins for being most consistently progressive, Rush wins for being more consistently listenable. (No offense, Space Groove)

Even if all you said were true, it doesn't stop me or anyone else from liking King Crimson more, and in the end it doesn't mean Rush is objectively better than King Crimson (as you claim). And also, there cannot be objectivity in music. Saying that Rush is as (in)accessible as King Crimson because "it's all prog, and therefore  inaccessible, and the average person can't get it" is both elitist (you imply that everyone who listens to prog is above average, thus you are above average) and quite simply stupid (compare Marillion to Gentle Giant, for example, or Genesis to Kayo Dot). I'm sorry, I've tried to make sense of what you're saying, but you are very headstrong. Just stop, please. You like Rush more than King Crimson, okay. You don't have to shove it up everybody's nose.

Not taking any credit away from Rush, however I personally could never compare a 3 member band to KC.
My knowleadge of Rush albums/music is limited thus unless anyone can suggest me better albums compared to "In the Court of the Crimson King", "Red" and "Discipline" among others, my vote is King Crimson.    Big smileApprove

ITCOTCK and Red album are in the PA top 10, but no Rush album is.

You can't turn around now and say that's because this site has a huge bunch of KC fanboys (and absolutely nothing to do with how good the albums might be), that's just bullsh*t because in the end it's all Prog.  Wink

Hi Sonia, In The Court is an absolute joke when it comes to receiving a high rating on this site, it's groundbreaking for sure but that alone doesn't automatically make it a 5 star album or great album because it's not Unhappy, Red is just average and Discipline is just King Crimson copying the Talking Heads nothing new or inventive, I still like you though Big smile

I never said any of that, I never said Rush's music was better and I never want to convert anyone, I'm just pointing out what I've seen from the reviews on PA. what I meant to say about the average person is that this music is not for the casual listener
