If you want to be all middle class and secure a job and housing before you move, then sure it's difficult and there are hidden costs. I was just pointing out that if you really want to relocate, right now, leaving every thing behind, you can. It would be even easier if we didn't have so many labor regulations. You always see in TV and movies someone drifting into town and immediately getting a job waiting tables, no questions asked. It's a shame that's not possible today with social security, minimum wage, and all other kinds of bureaucracy.

Whatever class you are, most people would want to have a iob and house secure before moving. Only really young people or people with no family or nothing to lose, or really, really adventurous, would move without some sort of security. And in that case wealth would help quite a lot.

Most people would want to have a roast beef dinner too, but it doesn't mean that couldn't do without one if necessary.

Relocating on a whim is kinda only an option if you're a survivalist nutjob and want to drag your family through hell.

I assumed we were talking about the truly poor, as in the homeless. It is easy for them to relocate. They have nothing to take with them, and no need to secure residence or job. All they have to do is scrape together enough money for a bus ticket and voila, move accomplished. My overarching point was that it annoys me the way people complain about things being impossible when they are merely inconvenient. People who say "I hate living in Texas, but I can't move" are really saying "I hate living in Texas, but not enough to do something about it, not as much as the first immigrants to America hated living in Europe, not enough to simply get in my car and leave." If you want to leave, leave. If you don't want to leave, quit yer whining. Edited by thellama73 - November 29 2012 at 20:24 |

I was talking about me, obviously, as we were discussing me wanting to move from Texas. I'm not exactly poor. Nowhere near wealthy either. And at least for today, not homeless. I want to leave, but also would like to continue my middle class existence. I'm not willing to go homeless to get out of this state. At least not yet. |

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I am not particularly enamored with WalMart for a number of reasons, but I think blaming them for what someone else did or failed to do is not terribly productive. |

I think it's more than about blaming a company, it's about holding a company responsible. If you want to be an apologist for bad company behavior, enjoy yourself.

Sorry, not stooping to this level of argument. A thoughtful discussion would be great, though.

I like to imagine that all of Slarti's news just comes from pictures with captions.
