Art of Navigating By the Stars is one of my favorite albums! Definitely check out their follow up album, Paramount, and check out the band Subsignal, which was formed after Sieges Even's breakup and features their vocalist and guitarist.

Wonderful band. What a pity they are defunct. "The Art of Navigating..." is sheer gold.

^I'm not that surprised that Subsignal doesnt seem to be as good as SE, it was always the Holzwarth brothers that were the brains behind SE.

Sense of change, absolutely brilliant album!

Subsignal the "new Sieges Even" however have disapointed me.

Yes, Steps is aswell very strong, techno thrash meets prog metal something between Fates Warning (Perfect Symmetry era) with Watchtower elements combined, realy intristing for that period, inventiv and yet quite unnoticed to many prog metal listners, another one among my fav from them is Sophisticated. Recommended band for sure, any album you can get is ok, they don't have weak albums

Many thanks for your supportive comments - at least I'm not alone in my enthusiasm!

It will be interesting to check the rest of the material of SE some day. I understood that the bulk of their earlier material is somehow more metallic, so let's see where my tolerance line lies in this case. I generally prefer at least partly softer/mellower material and at least in "Art of" the variation between harder and softer parts strikes a perfect balance for me.

Also this consecutive project Subsignal sounds interesting and has recieved favourable reviews.

So far I have only really listened to Paramount. Yes, great stuff! I'm pretty sure I have the rest. Still working on my M's lol. Lotsa music to get through and I'm trying to listen to it all.

The Art of... is definitely a brilliant album. I recommend you try their album Steps, quite different in their "Watchtower meets Fates Warning" phase. Personally I dont like A Sense of Change, though many others seem to consider it almost as good as Art of.

Sieges Even is one of the best and yet very underrated bands from prog world. I recommend A sense of change as their best and one of the most beautifuly crafted complex prog albums ever. Great band

One sentence from me.The art of navigating by the stars is a prog metal diamond.Also you must check A sense of change and Paramount.Arno Menses and Markus Steffen have now a new band that its name is Subsignal.

Hello all prog colleagues...

...and greetings from cloudy Turku, south-western coastal area of Finland! After occasionally consulting this forum during quite a few years I only now got the idea to check these discussion forums too - not only the discographies. And I was immediately impressed and satisfied for their scope and width of expertise and for the fact that my dearest band Marillion was deservedly well represented in the discussions here!

But after my hectic Marillion-comeback year, which was lived through by me in 2007 AD (divorce and many middle-aged traumas for which the then-mysterious Hogarth era provided the best conceivable background soundtrack), I've been in a slight predicament - what next?

Could anything in prog still rise into the same level in my limited mind?

And one day this spring, quite accidentally, I met a local prog enthusiast, who was far further than me in this genre. He recommended the Munich band Sieges Even to me.

And now I'm totally hooked with "The art of navigating by the stars" (2005) In short: it includes long-forgotten impressions from my finest adolescent memories of Rush and Yes, as well as something reminiscent of Marillion's best moments too.....but above all, great original creativity and beauty...

Are you familiar with the band (didn't find any threads of it at first glance here)? Could Sieges Even be one of the (slightly unknown?) prog legends of the bygone decade, or was I only navigating by the stars
