I've run into a road block lately, which has prone me to look into these forums for help.. I've been told, and believe, that my taste is prog-esque. Whether it is or not.. is up for you guys to decide. As for my existing taste; My Favorite Band by far is Tool. Also, by no means in order: A Perfect Circle, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Dredg, Nine Inch Nails, Dream Theater(So far just Octavrium), The White Stripes, Sigur Ros and Godspeed you BLack Emperor!, Mr Bungle, Fantomas, are decent, Incubus(SCIENCE), Opeth (Damnation), At The Drive-In, The Apex theory, Collide, Cave-In(Jupiter). If you could give me some suggestions/recommendations... I would be very appreciative. |

See about getting The Focusing Blur by Vintersorg. Swedish progressive metal rooted in viking/folk influence that is about science and astrology.

If you like to explore Prog Metal, continue with Pain Of Salvation (more prog) or Symphony X: The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (more metal). Secret Chiefs 3 is great, if you're into really experimental stuff. |

I will be strict, but begin to sell all the CDs you mentionned and go on previous, old classic bands as Soft Machine, Curved Air, Arthur Brown, Hawkwind, Amon Duul, Grobschnitt, Van der Graaf Generator...

If you like Tool....give Atomship a spin and let me know how you like it. Their debut CD is called "The Crash of 47".

How can you mention Hawkwind and Van der Graaf Generator in one sentence? |

Because they are befriended bands and appeared on gigs together. Nic Potter played bass on a solo album of Hawkwind keyboarder Steve Swindells, together with other Hawkwind members. Both Nik Turner of Hawkwind and Guy Evans of Van der Graaf Generator played in Mother Gong. Guy Evans and Hawkwind singer Robert Calvert both played together in the British Amon Düül (on the album "Die Lösung"). Enough reasons? |

I'm not THE big expert on Hawkwind, but isn't their music generally less complex than VdGG? |

If you like Tool you could check Deadsoul Tribe, definitly not the same, but espescially their debut have some Tool influence...
Another band you can check out is norwegian Ribozyme, not really prog... but as I can tell from your list you're not only into prog. They are heavily influenced by Tool, you could almost call them a less proggish, less complex and lighter version of Tool. Still pretty good though. Heres some songs from Ribozyme: http://ribozyme.no/download/mp3/ignorance.mp3 http://ribozyme.no/download/mp3/Invidia.mp3 http://ribozyme.no/download/mp3/Trail%20of%20Moment.mp3 and their homepage: http://ribozyme.no/frameset/welcome.htm I would also really recommend Pink Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon is the albums that's easiest to get into, and Meddle is their best effort.. but harder to get into if you're not used to prog. (IMHO) Edited by TLZ* |

Wow! These are great recommendations, and I think based on the original poster's list of bands he'll like most of these (especially SGM, Mono, Fantomas). How is the new Asva album, anyway? |

Since you're into some Patton stuff, you might want to check out
Radiator 4. They sound somewhat like his stuff with Dillenger Escape
