Oh no not that. NO wait...
Manunkind or whoever you really are. Before you go ahead with that
experiment, there is something you should know. I'm not barbs.
I come from the planet ...neeep..neeep..inglocolonconspiculate in the
solar system dorak rambulus earnus anusculus muochusgratis the
atre. My journey began in earth years, around 16 years ago from my
planet when the call came out from my fellow DTers as we call ourselves
there, that the planet here was self destructing and was ready for
incalculable amounts of DTing in order to bring the planet back into
balance.
So you see Manu if I can call you that
this experiment has been a success and we are weeding out those DT
haters by a process called 'Octavarianism' which shall forever be
remembered in the annuls of history as Oc day on our planet for that is
the language that we speak, Oc. So now as we consider the root of all
evil we know that the answer lies within these walls and I will walk
beside you even when you have a panic attack because there never can be
enough sacrificed sons for the Octavarium. Oc, oc, oc, oc, oc, oc...
And yes, after listening to it a number of times, I really do like the album.

Barbs:
Now that you've exposed me, you naughty, naughty earthling you have to be silenced. But before you're abducted and become a guinea pig in the upcoming "Love Beach Threshold" experiment, I'll reveal some truths about myself and my 'task' here:
1. My name isn't really Manunkind
2. I've uploaded a photo of me as my avatar
3. The experiment... ah yes, the experiment... (strokes three-eyed cat)... the experiment is really conducted on the... (five-minute drum roll) DT haters!!!
Don't really know much more about the nature of this experiment...although I heard rumours of a mind-warping new drug... supposed to be really powerful stuff... makes you believe the strangest things... and if these rumours are true, then looking at the percentage of DT haters on this forum, the experiment is a total success...
And now, Barbs, hold still, this isn't going to hurt... yet

I think that Octavarium will quickly jump to #1 in that list, and then they have to change the algorithm that computes it, because it simply puts more emphasis on the number of reviews than on the actual rating.

I'm actually finding that the sub-genre lists are much more
helpful. I've looked at some threads on the algorithm used to
statistically construct the top 100-500 and they have put alot of
thought into it and with music being as subjective as it is I think it
might be impossible to get a top 100 that is a clear representation of
aesthetic reality, but it is a good guide.
I don't think alot of people would argue with DT being in the top
couple of bands in Prog-Metal and it is only natural that a band with
such a strong following is going to poll heavily. I don't think anyone
disputes the talent of these guys but perhaps there is some confusion,
as it was for me orginally, as to the purose of the list. I thought it
was to indicate landmark albums that have generated certain degrees of
progress in the continuing history of progressive or art/expermentive
rock.
I would have assumed that the late 60s and 70s albums would be
fundamental to take up the top 10 to 15 albums and then over time, as
new bands breakthrough with 'watershed' albums, they would take their
rightful place at the top to the 'honour' board. That was how I thought
it worked but it is not like that. So now I go to the sub-genre
archives and I think that is where I get a clearer image of what I am
looking for.
I also understand the angst that some prog fans might feel at the
thought of ToT threatening the position of the top 5 albums. Hopefully
over time this will correct itself and that album will descend to a
position more befitting its place in the genre.

I like the album, it's decent. I just feel some people are over-rating it.

I agree, Room V is awesome. Octavarium is a 4 star album to me (very good, but not essential). Maybe it's a non-essential masterpiece.
It's fundamental flaw might be that it still contains many elements of the typical DT style that many hoped would progress.
