Topic: Gentle Giant live Posted: February 23 2012 at 06:43
i just saw gentle giant's zdf concert , this is really great!! how cool is the dual acoustic guitars part between gary and ray!? phenomenal stuff.. what's your fav live GG part? ( not a whole concert )
The live version of On Reflection at the BBC is phenomenal. Way better than the studio version in my opinion. So Sincere is also much more interesting on the the dvd because of the whole percussion feature at the end. It's a shame that GG never had any more live footage for us fans to view.

I love 'excerpts from Octopus' which is a bonus track on the recent reissue of Octopus. Can also be found on the DVD 'Giant On The Box' which features them on a German TV programme about 1974.I'll probably dig that out this weekend.

All of this stuff you guys mention is on the live album, Playing the Fool. Not video of course, but still incredible (OP didn't specify video, just live). Also the King Biscuit live album is excellent as well, if you want to hear the "Yankee Doodle" recorder performance in Advent Of Panurge.

It is too bad that there is only limited live dvd material from GG. Playing the Fool is my favorite of their live recordings. I was lucky enough-and old enough-to have seem them live twice-on the Interview Tour and the Civilian Tour. I'd have to agree that the acoustic guitar duet with Gary Green and Ray Shulman was the best part of a great show. The five man percussion piece to close out So Sincere is also darn good.

The best GG live is Giant On The Box..Maybe it's because I can't stand the post '76 stuff..
I watched that Friday night for the first time in ages. Although only 45 minutes long approx there is some brilliant stuff here. Then main featured gig is from a German concert at the time of Power And The Glory but pre Freehand. As I said before I love 'Features From Octopus' but there is also an extended version of 'So Sincere' which has to been seen and heard to be believed. Totally unique

Fantastic video indeed, the acoustic guitar duet is great (you can see from where did Neal and Alan Morse get their inspiration for their own duets) but there's so much good stuff that it's difficult to pick up a favourite. The parts where they show their multi-instrumentalist abilities are great, Minnear's vibraphone solo, Ray's violin, the recorder quartet, the percussion quintet with Gary laughing as he drops a drumstick...
It's shocking to see the belgian audience dead silent after the opening Cogs in Cogs but yeah, I live in Belgium for a while and I can confirm that they are very quiet people , they get more enthusiastic after the killer raid from Proclamation to Experience.
Ah, and I love the faces of John Weathers as he plays
Giant on the Box is their only DVD I have, I know I need to get GG at the GG one day, hopefully soon...

I was fortunate to see GG play live three times. Thee was simply nothing like it. Sure, Genesis, Yes, Floyd, et al had amazing shows, full of sound and light and bombast. (I mean that in a good way...LOL.) But GG was pure musical brilliance - and humor. We will not see their like again.
BTW, Google "YouTube Gentle Giant," and you will find lots of fun live videos from all over the world. Some of them are true gems.

Yes, you'll find a fair amount of official live material, but you'll also find videos of Gentle Giant conventions that contain live tribute band performances with some of the original members.

I always loved "Features from Octopus" from that DVD, particularly "Advent of Panurge", with the recorder interlude. GG were a great band and just talking about them gives me chills!
