Topic: Who does this ? Posted: February 09 2012 at 22:04 |
Posted a while back but figure there are some fresh minds out there now.
It was June 1977 when I recorded this off of WNEW FM 102.7 in NYC I missed any info about the track or the artist. With one of the most haunting middle sections and a killer guitar solo at the end, I have been searchin for along time So would anybody have any clue here ? http://youtu.be/GoYWB8NBevI thought perhaps the solo sounds very much like John Goodsall ( Brand X -Atomic Rooster ) Edited by sturoc - February 09 2012 at 22:05 |

That made me very curious. When the drums came in, I was sure it must be some well known studio musician. And yeah, the guitar sounds like Goodsall...
But I thought it could be Simon Phillips on drums... I checked his chronology. He was on tour with Jack Bruce in -77.
I'm checking out Jack Bruce now... could it be him?
edit: It doesn't seem to be him, not the same style.
Well, you could always check out what Goodsall did in -77.
I'm curious about who plays the drums! Edited by wilmon91 - February 09 2012 at 22:48 |

No, it must be Phil Collins!?!
There are several Collins-traits in the playing. Edited by wilmon91 - February 09 2012 at 23:07 |

There's a Brand X album called The X-Files—A 20 Year Retrospective
"A compilation of mostly previously unreleased rarities: disc 1 feaures Brand X recordings, while disc 2 consists of various other projects that have involved John Goodsall or Percy Jones. The X-Files delivers some great fusion playing. Bruford had an early association with Brand X, rehearsing with the band for a few weeks before commitments to King Crimon curtailed his involvement, apart from some occasional live appearances on percussion. However, Bruford's appearance on this album comes from a later project: in 1977, Goodsall, Bruford and members of San Francisco band Automatic Man got together for what the liner notes describe in one place as a band called Vertical Invader and in another as work towards a solo album for Goodsall. The only surviving recordings from those sessions are these two tracks. They are good tracks, much in the style of Goodsall's other work; Bruford's contribution is unobtrusive on "Here I am Now", but somewhat more distinctive on "Measure the Sky". (Goodsall made a brief appearance on Bruford's Feels Good to Me.)
As an archival compilation, Jones and Goodsall are not even sure who plays on some tracks, being uncertain of the percussionist on (8) or of the drummer or keyboardist on (10). (HP, 2 Nov 02) "
Tracks: CD1: The X-Files 1. The X-Files Theme (Jones/Goodsall) 1:56 2. Nuclear Burn/Cambodia (no writing credit given) 6:46 3. True to the Click (Goodsall/Pusch) 5:30 4. Healing Dream (Goodsall) 3:49 5. Thalidomide Squid (Jones/Goodsall) 5:13 6. Born Pretty in a Disco (Jones/Goodsall) 8:06 7. Noddy Goes to Sweden (Jones) 7:13 8. Kugelblitz (Jones/Goodsall) 10:57 9. Don't Make Waves (Goodsall) 5:31 10. John "No" Doe (Goodsall/Jones) 2:49 CD2: eX-Tracks Nothing on the album resembles the music in the youtube clip, but I thought it could be that project "Vertical Invader"?

I apologize for not having listened to your sample because I have that CD and likely would have recognized it. However it isn't on that one.
It could just be a local group that didn't go far. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 10 2012 at 11:36 |

I was listening to Ray Russell - Ready Or Not (1977) and it is incredible how similar Simon Phillips sounds to Phil Collins. The sound on the drums is also very similar to some brand x album from that time.
Listening to those samples, I would have been positive that it is Collins, but it's Phillips.
So going back to the topic, I feel 98% sure that the drummer is Collins or Phillips.
The extra tracks of "ready or not" has some of that soul-fusion feeling. The youtube clip has slightly more of a Santana-feeling, that's why I thought that "Automatic Man" connection was interesting since that band consists of Santana members, from what i've heard.

I listened to the two albums by Automatic Man. The first one has some great songs, the second is not very interesting, disco-funk.
Great song!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcr4_Tr0uZA
great drumming here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_4TMii0tts
The drummer is Michael Shrieve (Santana) - didn't know he was that good.
I can see similarities to the Youtube clip .
- Variety of keyboard sounds as well as piano , by Todd Cochran (who was called "Bayete"). harmonic variety in the music. - wah wah guitar as well as solo guitar with fast notes occassionally
- Similar character in the singing voice, plus the use of backing vocals
- the drumming by Shrieve is similar too.
The difference is that the youtube clip is more instrumental and a bit more obscure.
But I still strongly believe that it's Goodsall on guitar. And Collins, or Phillips on drums..
Well, Goodsall has a Youtube account, so maybe it's best to ask him!

My interest was piqued so I gave the song a listen. It does have a sense of familiarity to it, but I can't say that I recognize the song or the band. I searched my collection for songs of a similar length from 1977 or before but I came across no matches. I will be curious to see what the answer ends up being. |

Good suggestions here. I have all of Brand X's work and for sure it is not them -have listened and 'analyzed them since first hearing their stuff in late 70s.
I did look into Goodsall's discography et.al. Kinda a hole round this time. Just tried to ctc him but he has a "contact lock" on his account. Meaning one can only ctc him if he makes you a contact first. For sure not Jack Bruce, as I am a huge fan as well. There was a guess a while back about it being Chicago ( of all bands ! ) due to the vocals and the guitar work. WNEW at that time was playing alot of obscure even one lp wonder type bands. NOVA comes to mind in this category. But of course this track is not by them Hopefully some one here will nail it cause this has been, geez, a 35 year quest for me. And if this track is any indication of their other songs, these guys are monsters! Edited by sturoc - February 11 2012 at 01:23 |

I was getting more doubtful as I realized that the first part of the song the playing is slightly "choppy" and not perfectly synchronized. But it's such a strange kind of music. I couldn't describe the first instrumental part. Some kind of instrumental latin prog with moog bass? The other half has a different style with soulful vocals. I would be very interested in finding out who this is. But I'm thankful for this topic, because I discovered the album by Automatic Man which has completely blown me away!
Hoping to see some ideas in this thread. No suggestions so far apart from my theorizing.
Maybe you can write on his guestbook on his main youtube page?
Otherwise there is an email adress on this page, but I wonder if he really uses that.

Woah, tough to figure out - though I can see the 'automatic man' feel
Here's what some lyrics seem to sound like for me - tough to hear indeed. Some are what might be the 'lead' voice and the brackets might be the backing line if the world must be this way/wasted? where a dream would look much better 'chorus' why please(?) glad/like when someone has to tell me (something that they have to sell me) |

There was a short lived project in 1975 which had a lineup including John Goodsall, Gary Moore, Jack Lancaster, Bill Bruford, Percy Jones , Robin Lumley. "The Soul Searchers" only released a single , "Scaramouche / Head Stand". Would have been nice to hear it just to rule it out as a possibility, but I haven't found it...
Of course, judging by that snare sound in the beginning, it could be Bruford..

Now that's an interesting link I found when googled from your post wilmon, and would likely be a candidate for a possible answer here, BTW what you may think is a snare drum is actually congas -listen carefully to the first 30-40 seconds. There are no drums until the middle section. The more I listen, really listen to the structure of the guitar solo, i lean to Goodsall. If one listens to Brand X Lp Masques this type of soloing is all over that album. dreadpirate.. real good on the lyrics almost spot on to what I hear as well. the short bridge or chorus lyrics sounds like : "what I need ( or 'feel' 'see' ) " if we could decipher this it may be a big clue to the song title addt'l verse: "where a tree ( dream) would look much better." "glad when someone has to tell me " "something that they have to sell me" Edited by sturoc - February 13 2012 at 23:44 |
