Nathaniel607 suggested them for crossover back in February, but they were rejected for some reason. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=76207&KW=41point9&PID=4069967#4069967 They are a fine prog band imho, with some well-respected musicians from existing established prog acts (Enchant, Spock's Beard), and should be included on here somewhere for sure. Perhaps they could have voted "move" last time instead of simply rejecting them? Not sure if they are really symphonic though - it is certainly more melodic and accessible than complex and experimental - maybe neo might give them a chance, but I still think crossover is the place they really ought to be. Don't know whether 'second chances' are allowed here though.

No new album released as yet - don't forget, the last one was only finished earlier this year, though the band have begun working on the next one according to their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/41POINT9. It's a shame that they can't be re-evaluated on the strength of the quality of their debut. I'd like to know why crossover rejected them - I can only assume that they considered the material to be too close to AOR to be included on here. There certainly is an overall AORish sound to the album, but the song structures go far beyond the usual AOR fayre. I wonder what the neo team would make of it if they had a listen? There's always prog-related I suppose, but that would really be doing these guys an injustice. I can only hope a collaborator who has heard the album & liked it picks up on this thread and can find a way to move things forward somehow.

Excellent review of this album by Steven Reid on seaoftranquility.org: http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=11492. Pretty well sums it up perfectly.

This is neither Symphonic nor Crossover, but that kind of heavy instrumental prog fusion that doesn't really have its own category on PA - no jazz to qualify for JR/F, not heavy enough for Heavy Prog... These bands tend to get ping-pong'd by genre teams. I'll have to think.

Here's ProGGnosis's take on the matter: http://www.proggnosis.com/PGRelease.asp?RID=34269. Another quite positive review which more or less makes the same statement regarding the dificulty of assigning this music to a specific genre. It will be a great shame if this band can't be found a place on here somewhere, I feel. Perhaps prog-related will ultimately be the only option. The pedigree of the musicians involved in the project will surely qualify them for that category if nothing else. There are some pure neo prog passages interspersed throughout the album, but I guess nowhere enough of them to get the guys a serious shot in that category. Difficult one, I know - but to let this band/album fall by the wayside completely would be awful imho.

It's fine music. As it is with this kind of music, my girlfriend absolutely loves them. For me, the can be borderline Crossover Prog. I was undecided back then when we were voting, but the rest of the Crossover team were sure that this is NO Crossover Prog. Symphonic Prog - if you want my opinion, they stand 0% chance. I can't see a scenario, where they would be accepted. Symph is completely different kind of music. Prog-Related ? That one "should" have lesser demands on Prog side, but it's not even more difficult to get there in some cases. |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Still no 41POINT9 in the Archives even when the question was raised months ago??
I agree they are pretty hard to categorize within prog's sub-genres, but they are prog nevertheless.
I got their CD "Still Looking For The Answers" (Progrock Records, 2011) yesterday. Sounds very much like Spock's Beard to me, especially for the vocals, but with less eclectic compositions. My suggestion is Prog-Related (a cruel compromise perhaps...).

Speaking on behalf of the Symphonic Team this band has a snowball's chance in hell of getting added to that genre.
Its not a Symph sound really. But very much like heavy prog. Hope they get in somewhere cos its porg... er prog.

OK Heavy Prog, but no Prog Related. They're 100% Prog act without a doubt.

Their album is really good. I enjoyed reading the liner notes too. The story behind the album cover was pretty hilarious. My thought was that their best location was crossover, but crossover rejected them, so I am guessing that they aren't going to be included at this time. It looks as though Heavy Prog was leaning towards rejecting them too. Maybe a move to Neo, but I don't think that is a good fit either. Maybe they will have future releases that might make them more qualified to be added. Either way, I did really enjoy this album and it is worth checking out by those who like crossover type prog.

It is simply mind-boggling that we still don't have this band in our archives.
From their facebook wall (5th Jan 2012): http://www.facebook.com/#!/41POINT9 -
"Wow! so at last count 41POINT9 has been included in no less than 9 different "BEST OF 2011" radio shows, reviewer's favorites and compilations. Thanks so much for everyone that voted for us, bought the record and recommended us to their friends. Stay tuned for 2012 ..its gonna be wild ride with lots of new music, videos and perhaps, just maybe, some live performances somewhere. :-) ~ Bob" And, (1st December 2011): "Hey everyone! This is really cool, so far we have found out that we are going to be played on at least three best of 2011 prog shows. There may be more but i have heard of at least three. Jeff Collins at Sunshine FM, Tony Romero @ AIIR radio and Paul Demers at Pollywogs progcast all included 41POINT9 as one of the best releases of 2011. With all the incredible music released this year, this is a really big honor for us and we are humbly grateful! Thanks everyone! ` bob" At least someone of influence out there in the prog world accepts them into the genre.

HolyGod!!!!!!, this is a damn hard mix.
I find: 1.- Fusion 2.- Hard Rock 3.- Some sort of Industrial feeling 4.- A bit of Electronic It's hard to place them, probably Fusion. Prog of course, as a fact excellent music, but not Symphonic Iván |

So...what now?
41Point9
That's a lot of red 'x's in there... 'Not Otherwise Specified' were cleared recently in Heavy Prog after more than 6 months of being shunted back and forth - can 41Point9's case be resolved somehow with sufficient endeavour and determination too? There was also the issue of 'Townscream', back in November, which never got a resolution as far as I can see: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=82722 (it disolved into a far more general discussion about sub genres eventually, and it seems the band themselves kinda got forgotten about in the ensuing melee...) And doubtless people who've been on here a few years could dig up plenty of others - like when Olav (Windhawk) dropped this little beauty into the 'Not Otherwise Specified' thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=78699&PID=4352523#4352523 (happily it has since succesfully resolved!) Maybe it's time we had a place to put these bands that 'don't fit', after they've seemingly exhausted all possibilities with the sub genres that we have already, and have been left in limbo for a certain period of time? 'Unidentified Prog' or something along those lines. On the other hand - maybe we should just bung them all in Avant...insomuch as we 'avant got a flippin' clue where else to put them!!

These guys have been put on hold while we go through our current "New" list.
About Townscream, they're currently being eval'd by the Eclectic team, who has a pretty extensive back log. And of couse SOTE has been added. The Unspecified Genre has been discussed before, although I don't remember specifically where it went; just that it didn't go anywhere fast. And nice play on words there

I honestly believe that Eclectic is the only solution, too complex for Crossover.
