BEST 70/80s PROG (OMIT UK)

Just thought I would include some reasoning.
Most of the great prog music in my opionion was
made during the 70's stateside and in the UK. The
chamber was in confusing in the castles in England.
And Rock n Roll P**** was everywhere in the states.
The record industry distroyed the creative talent
along with government monitoring and creativity
ceased to exist. The German scene got going later ,
mid seventies and lasted until the mid 80s, while the
continent popped up good acts here and there also
during this time period.
The reason some bands were not included, my
opionion:
Triumvirat - ELP knockoff, lyrics trying to sound tough
but no real depth
Eloy - never found anything great by them, although I
liked the nude album cover
Popul Vuh - Florian had good moments but to much
meddling around on a majority of his stuff
Rush - never a serious truly original band, Priest of
the temples of syrinx, is circled by horseflies and
Farewell to Kings and Moving ..... they almost made
something interesting. Neil Young was the best
thing to come from canada and a legitimate talent.
Bancos italian lyrics always got in the way for me,
and english version is to hard to get into the vocals.
Anyway thats why I dont consider those bands.
Horslips = irish Jethro Tull, try Book of Invasions for
those interested, better than any Steeleye Span,
Renaissance, etc. If you like that give Audience -
House on the Hill a spin.

I knew DallasBryan had it in for Rush..

I'm itching for a fight!!!!!!!! I shall resist and return to work..

Focus got me into all of this. Focus got me into serious music. Jazz & classical. Prior to getting into Prog-rock I was only listening to Elvis in the early seventies. Focus gave me the opportunity to diversify my musical tastes, and I found them in progressive rock!

I consider progressive rock to exist for 3 main
reasons

1. for those who apprieciate science fiction, such as
Lord of the Rings, Dune and comic books. Basically
esoteric avenues for child fantasy and the pubescent
mind. The "I am Not Experienced" crowd.

2. experimental music avenues for complex
musicianship and overworking of speed verses
content music, and intellectual self indulgence.(most
jazz fusion, Gentle Giant could even fall into this
category). Not for the mainstream but musicians
who are over indulged in their art.

3. for a spiritual avenue to develop relations between
darkness and mans conscience thru occult,
hallucenagenic states, narcotic and sexual
experiences. Performed by advanced musicians that
carry an intellectual edge.

I am of the 3rd persuation and am not a true prog
head, as I dont consider it but one of the best
avenues in music for story telling or altered states.
My musical foundation was laid in the 70s and saw
most of you guys favorites many times as I was a
roadie working with VariLite during the 70s and early
80s. I have met 100s of your favorite musicians and
burned the house down. This is just my viewpoint
and I understand all will not agree.

I will never be a backer of Rush or U2 because I
consider them 2nd tier groups. I recognize the
impact they have had on some I just think it is the
difference in sci-fi verses the state of mans spiritual
or sexual condition and the stories of that interaction
in music .
2 types of popular bands - those who got it and
those who wish thy did!

Those who see my perspective should engage in
this conversion.
Those who dont , NO HARM INTENDED!!!

RUSH breakdown
Alex Lifeson could of had a good career with a top
tier prog band, as well as Neil Pert, a wonderful
drummer.
Geddy Lee should have stuck to playing the bass
and left his fairytales in the fire.
With a good psychedelic songwriter and a
keyboardist or maybe a sax/flute player they could
have been something.
