I agree about the oldschool thing, Brian.

Most games I see released now are FPS' of some kind.  I hate FPS'.

Of course you do get the odd RPG and RTS worth playing now and again.  Even some of those aren't especially good though.

JJ, the PS2 has some amazing titles. Tons of stuff worth checking out if you haven't already.

The Gamecube's library is much more spotty, but still got some amazing stuff. I still play Mario Kart: Double Dash with one of my friends every time we go to his. Good times.

Also, helps that they're insanely cheap now/games are next to nothing.

As far as modern games go, I don't think it's as bad as some say. Although games are definitely a lot less interesting/original than they were. Playing Baldur's Gate 2 again for the past few days, it's hard to say I can think of many games which had the same amount of effort put in.

Also been playing Earthbound lately... Man I love this game.

I'll finish my playthrough of Earthbound one day.  The same applies for Chrono Trigger.

BUT WHY

It's undeniable that AAA games are dominated by shooters because they sell, but most games being released are not shooters, and you really have to look harder. MW3 is the only shooter in the top 10 both worldwide and in the US. And while I would point out to joel that you are reaping a decade of improvement post-release, yes, a game like Baldur's Gate 2 can't exist now because making a world that huge would be impossibly expensive, even with the cut-pasting. Great, PA has regressed further and now doesn't even like the shift+enter returns on Opera. SPEND FIVE MINUTES UPDATING THE GOD DAMN SOFTWARE MAX

Skyrim looks pretty large.  Fallout: New Vegas was also pretty large.  I'm not sure how they compare compared to BG2 in terms of size though.

I heard Arena and even Daggerfall had larger game playing worlds than Morrowind and Oblivion.

It doesn't help that I'm a PC gamer.  I do look at the 360 and PS3 games though when I'm with my mate in town and none of them take my fancy whatsoever (if I did own a console of course).

Throne of Bhaal was originally supposed to be BG3, hence why that's such a large expansion for BG2.

I uninstalled a bunch of things I don't play and freed up another 70GB of HDD space

I would do that, Colin but a lot of the games I don't play often are games I plan to play again and some have Mods and packs installed and it'd take me ages to reinstall.

Neverwinter Nights is one such game.  I have a lot of stuff for that game that would be a pain to reinstall.

Plus the games I really don't plan to play I've already uninstalled and the ones left aren't very big in size and it wouldn't make much difference.

I meant size and content. Daggerfall doesn't count because a lot of it is procedurally generated.

I am not even using 70 GB of space total. My hard drive is only 160 so I can't be frivolous to begin with.

Mine is 320 Gb but of course that's reduced down to 292 Gb.

Uninstalling Oblivion reduced a lot of my harddisk space.

The content in Skyrim is huge if you include all the quests as well.  I think there's a lot of reuse of textures though.

I've long since passed the stage since I spend lots of time with computer games.  However, If anyone wants to join me sometime in Microsquash's version of online UNO...

Joelsy PS2 had some of my favorite games, and so many! Maybe when I was younger I just cared less but just games seemed better. Gamecube was also great. Part was nostalgia. As a kid I loved wave race so the game cube one was :O  and the super smash bros, so many great star wars games. Pretty much it was the last console before nintendo went to sh*t IMO

JOEL I STARTED DARK SOULS
I was already expecting this and it still got me: creeped out and intimidated.
Dark, cryptic beyond words, utterly lost and confused, (seriously there are like 7 ways I can take right now) and the infamous scary boss right off the bat.
Although like the tower knight it's more intimidating than difficult. Game is a mind f**k and a half.

Damn, well I hand it to em..in a world where all games are the same and few make you feel anything...in 20 minutes I am utterly lost, and scaredLOL Never has a game/series actually had me so intimidated to play!

Joelsy my only beef thus far is...NO NEXUSShocked
I guess the game is linear. Gunna miss being able to choose and all but aw well...

As for FPS I dont mind per se, just they are all the same sh*t. Played a bunch, all the same thing, seriously.
No originality and care these days, especially shooters. They have short and/or sh*tty campaign and just focus for multiplayer which, is all the sameLOL

I detest typical FPS games. I really liked the first two FEAR games, and Bioshock? C'mon! That's golden! Half-Life 2, Bioshock, etc. Love those to pieces. Really like the Gears of War series, too - visceral and to the point, but not FPS games.

Now I'm playing Mass Effect while listening to Kate Bush's Hounds of Love.

It's always possible that you are just incredibly lucky and have never crashed. However, RE5 crashed 4 times on me going through one playthrough, for example. Your uncanny luck does not explain away the reality that consoles crash and have always crashed.

However, the odds that Mass Effect runs well on your 360 and not on anyone else's is pretty much nil. I suspect you just have rather low standards for framerates.

In my experience, most people end up with PC issues because they feel compelled to search Google for "anal porn" and then start clicking randomly. Confused

No idea about BG2 versus Skyrim or New Vegas, but Daggerfall's world was massive and quite lifeless.

Indeed, lifeless.  I don't much like the Elder Scrolls games anyway.  Skyrim does seem to be an improvement though despite all the bugs.

BG2 with both expansions is rather large and it doesn't copy and paste scenery all the time either.

I can't psychologically tolerate a game running at a framerate below 45. I know because I tortured myself a while back tweaking Fallout III to run on my computer.

As a note, I've never looked up 'anal porn' on this computer.

ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

On the 360, Mass Effect and its sequel are both framelimited to 30. ME2 generally stays close, but ME1 frequently falls into the 10-15 range. On the PC, the default framelimit is 60, but that can be removed if you so choose (though it won't get you anything if your monitor refresh rate isn't higher than 60hz).

I would be lying if I said I had any idea what you're claiming at this point.

As I said, I can send you footage of me playing Mass Effect with a tolerable framerate. I don't know why you have to pretend superiority because you'd rather play games on the holy, divine computer than the lowly, pathetic console.

I may boot my game up later and check my framerate as I'm curious now.

It's probably lower than you think it is. Mine even falls into the 30s sometimes. I'm on Noveria; I'll bench it some time. It's clearly lower than Alitare thinks it is, since he thinks its running faster than the limit.

Random YouTube search.

Go to 1:38 for 360 framerate wonderfulness. The whole video constantly shows the game chugging along at 20fps or so. Or perhaps you would prefer IGN's repeated references to the "technical shortcomings" of the game:

Notice how smooth ME2 looks in comparison, since it sticks at 30fps (which you claim to find intolerable)?

So no, I don't believe that you're running at 60fps on your 360 (not possible) or even 30fps (you'd be the only person in the world to get it). You could cherry-pick some scenes where the framerate sticks to 30, but it's moot.
