No worries - cupcakes are just too girlie to contemplate anyway so my choice would be muffins of either nationality.

God...you English make everything so complicated. American Muffins are the real deal, English muffins make a better sandwich bread though. |

It's just a matter of time: England - established 927CE, 'merica sometime last Tuesday, probably somewhere between breakfast and lunchtime (an established fact, as celebrated in the 'merican meal of "brunch"). We've just had more time to graduate past the simple stuff onto the complex - we were doing the cakey style muffins when the Romans were trying to make pizza ovens work in an English climate (how archaeologists mistakenly call them hypocaust heating systems is a mystery to me - 'tis obvious to all they are failed pizza ovens) - of course we didn't call them 'merican Muffins then because 'merica hadn't been invented yet, so in lieu of a name we just called them cakes. We went on to develop the more complicated yeasty bready muffins during the reign of Alfred the Grate (due to the cakes he managed to burn being inedible).
Given enough time the 'mericans will invent yeasty muffins and knowing how inventive you guys can be at naming things you'll probably call them puck cakes or something.

I was under the impression that English muffins were practically unknown in the UK. Was I mistaken?
(I must say, they're good for making eggs benedict. Yum yum.) The designer cupcake fad seems to be dying out. |

Well, we didn't know they were called English Muffins until recently that's for sure, we just called them Muffins.
'merican muffins have become pretty ubiquitous over here, not that I'm complaining, it's one 'merican import I'm happy to see (if only they'd import left hand drive Mustangs I'd be really happy).
Thankfully - that frosting they use is just unpleasant... oh wait - breaking news: they've been replaced with whoopie pies - same crap, different packaging.

Muffins. Especially the ones with chocolate or blueberries.
I like the size too. One muffin is most of the times enough for my appetite. Cupcakes on the other hand... |
