Gee, The Mars Volta use guitar, bass, drums, and a vocalist- that sort of thing has been done to death already.  It's been around since, what, the 1920s?  So uncreative.

Hmm, now that it's been brought up, The Mars Volta do have many retro moments, and I am always reminded of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Santana.

King Crimson is a definite influence.

Though i wouldn't label Santana as an influence just because they use Latin beats and vocals.

And Pink Floyd is pretty much always an influence if a band has any psych tendencies.

I know, I didn't say that. ;)

Neither do Spock's Beard though, I would spot the modern symph sound with my eyes closed.

I disagree with this.  There are plenty of psychedelic or space rock bands that sound nothing at all like Pink Floyd.  I would go so far as to say that were it not for Pink Floyd's earlier albums and a few tracks here and there, they would probably be best suited in the Crossover genre.

I listen to music with one eye open; one eye closed, so I get the best of both worlds Wink

Electric bass has only been around since something like the 1950s. Stern Smile

Santana's influence is actually evident. The difference is that TMV's spanish vocals are completely horrible.
They are a great and creative band, but they are not that original band people believe they are. Anyway, it's ok if you love them, or if you love Spock's Beard... music is subjectivity.

Very different instrument, both in style and in sound/how it's played.  I couldn't imagine TMV using one of these. LOL

I hope this is sarcasm, it'd be like saying Dylan invented folk.

So I get here, 88 new posts and SB are in the lead, well sh*t.
Oh, and I find TMV, especially Frances, to be highly emotional.
