Why does it say I can't vote in this poll? I want to support one of my favourite bands, Spock's Beard!

The only reason you joined this site is to do that, so tough. Read Daves post at spocksbeard.com. he explains

To vote in a poll on ProgArchives you need at least 40 posts - this is due to members sometimes creating multiple accounts just to throw the results of polls.

I'm still surprised that Mars Volta is in the lead. I hope they win. They are, after all, the more imaginative band on this poll.

I voted for The Mars Volta. I'm not terribly keen on The Mars Volta, but definitely like it considerably more than Spock's Beard. Spock's Beard has been one of my least liked acts in PA since I arrived at PA. I haven't heard that much by the band, but I bought Snow based on recommendations and was highly disappointed to say the least. I had thought the band would have big appeal to those who like Gentle Giant, which was my favorite band at the time.

If you like GG, Snow was the worst album to get. I woulda gone with Beware of Darkness or V.

Yeah, because "Cassandra Gemini" is so punk.

Yeah, it was probably a bad recommendation to me at the time. I had subsequently been advised that V would have been better (I have listened to some music off it). I don't like GG that much anymore (barely listened to GG for four to five years -- Art Zoyd and Magma quickly supplanted GG's place when I discovered them), and from what else I've heard of SB, it's not a band I wish to explore.

I really don't get the "cheesy" reference.

These two bands could hardly be more opposite. I can see why it would be difficult to like both, or to love one and hate the other.

That's my attempt to lampoon them in the manner with which they are accustomed. I don't really get exactly why they are considered cheesy either, but whatever.

I think we ought to get things in perspective.
1) Polls are a bit of fun. They matter not a jot. Anyone who tries to rig them is a bit sad.
2) The number actually voting is miniscule (usually under 100) and is not a reflection of "the real world".
3) Progarchives has allowed in a lot of bands way outside the mainstream of prog so some members who have signed up have slightly unusual tastes, so polls give funny results. This has p****d off a lot of genuine prog fans who have left the site.
In my local York and Leeds prog group, we have over 110 members. I am (I think) the only one who now contributes on this site. Many did do but left, though I know some access the site for the invaluable information on it.
We took a decision some time ago that some bands were not really progressive and would not be featured at our meetings and The Mars Volta was one of them (with very few dissenters). Spocks Beard is a band that gets some discussion and they are fairly popular though not universally liked. So at our meetings, I'm certain that this poll would result in a clear win for Spocks Beard.
So whichever wins, it doesn't mean they are the better band, It all depends who you ask. So it really doesn't matter two hoots, does it?

Your prog group is huge. Do you have more than one drummer?
Seriously though. You are right. Perspective. At one time I i used to prefer liking bands that not many else liked or new of.

The Mars Volta has five 4-star albums, while Spock's Beard has one 5-star album and a string of 3s and 4s (have not heard X yet). However, SB has good live material, whereas TMV has Scab Dates. Basically a tie for me.

There is always the few that fall into the overlap of the Venn diagram.
btw, what Mars Volta album would you recommend? I have heard Bedlam and thought it was a bit awful really.
