Not to wait until the last minute or anything, but...I just got around to pre-ordering it today, and it will be my first midnight release party for any game/console EVER!

Because the new CoD has just been released in the UK and people are queuing up for it at midnight and saying it'll be game of the year. I thought everyone on here would be playing it. It was also in reference to whoever said they have to wait a week to play a new release. I was just pointing out that silly CoD fans seemingly cannot wait even five minutes after its release and even book time off work to play it. It's entirely relevant, unlike you. I might play Skyrim if it had that giant kitty in it.

I've just realized - I think Skyrim is the first game I've bought this year which wasn't something on sale for a very low price ($10 or less) on Steam! I plan to get much more than my money's worth from it, so it's OK.

I am kind of hoping Skyrim is terrible like its predecessors. Except people will realise this is the case and not keep glorifying such an average series as something it's not.
Just sayin'. |

Nobody cares about Call of Duty fans who may or may not actually exist but certainly aren't posting on this forum.

I'm sure fans of other games will do the exact same thing, Henry.
I'm wishing ill on a game, not people. |

James, I'm still convinced you never played Morrowind or Oblivion, or if you have you don't like open-ended RPGs, because those two were stellar examples of how to make them. I find Oblivion to be more fun than any of the Baldur's Gate type games too (though I still enjoy those) and I'm expecting Skyrim to better them all.

Oblivion is AMAZING, but Fallout 3 is meh. I like the swords and spells more i guess.

In reality perhaps (though I won't know until I've played it and given it my entirely fanboy-biased opinion), but there are too many ZOMG SHOOTER GAME LOLOLOL gamers out there now, so most likely Fish: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3 will win it. |

But the game being poor affects people! I've never played Oblivion, but even BG1 had better design choices than Oblivion. Everything scaling up with you is the dumbest idea in the history of gaming. |

Oh, I agree that it'll be more "important" but too many people care more about playing a carbon copy of an older game than about how important something is (though I'll admit, if I had a much better PC than I currently do I'd be tempted to check out BF3 because it sounds a bit interesting).

I have played both (not to completion). Morrowind is ever-so-slightly better than Oblivion. Graphically it's terrible. Character interaction is also pretty crap too. I preferred the feel of the game though and I quite liked getting attacked by ridge riders (or whatever they were called). I preferred the guild site of it too. Killing people in Morrowind seemed to have more of a consequence. There was a lack of an assassins-type guild in Oblivion. Apart from some loony guy who randomly attacks you, you can walk around the Oblivion world without much happening. My main gripes are: 1. endless fetch quests 2. endless and meaningless fights (respawning of the same enemies is not fun) 3. the terrible NPC interaction 4. the combat system (both games) 5. level-up system 6. just general open-endedness I've not played Fallout 3 but what I've seen of it looks much better than Oblivion and I generally prefer D&D settings over futuristic/future-tech ones. Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, even Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights (which have a lot of faults) are light years ahead and were made 10 years or so before. I think I may even slightly prefer Arena over Morrowind and Oblivion. I happen to prefer Isometric games too. Edited by James - November 09 2011 at 18:20 |

GOTY from who, exactly? Gaming magazines? Who give a f**k what they think about anything?
I kind of doubt Skyrim will actually be as "important" as you are trying to claim. |

Indeed. I agree with this. That is partly why Diablo II annoyed me a bit. You complete the game once but then you have to play the exact same game again with your existing character, against slightly more difficult opponents. No, sorry, that's terrible. At least give me a new story, new maps, new enemies. Edited by James - November 09 2011 at 18:17 |

While Diablo 2 (and all Blizzard games) are grindingly boring for me, that's not a fair comparison because the Diablo campaign is fairly long even without replaying it. The problem with Oblivion is that everything scales up with you level, so a rat can kill you at level 20 and it's actually in your interest to slow down you levelling as much as possible... And you do get new enemies on the harder difficulties of Diablo. They change color. ;-) |

That's why I put important in quotation marks. To me, it's the most important release of the year, as it's the only game I've cared enough to buy. To a lot of gamers, it'll pass by relatively unnoticed. They have made a lot of progress on the game engines and tried to overhaul the combat system to make it better, and if I remember right from one of the preview videos, Todd Howard said that the enemies no longer scale up with you (to address the other concern). |
