| What does instrument ability and prowess have to do with being or not being prog? Barbara Dennerlein's band could comfortably 'own' Genesis for instrumental prowess but so what? What does that have to do with anything....prog is just an approach to composition in rock and it is not necessary that such a composition must necessarily involve virtuosity. I don't think the Floyd were virtuosos and even if they were, the music does not accommodate display of such virtuosity (or showboating, to put it more bluntly) and yet their early work is some of the most influential of all prog. You are getting confused here between which of DT and Metallica is the better band - a discussion I am not interested in because that is your opinion and I have mine - and whether Metallica is a fit addition to Prog Related. Your arguments for why they cannot even fit into Prog Related do not convince me at all. I am thoroughly convinced about their influence on metal and your disdain for Metallica is not going to change that. Attempt to demonstrate that Metallica were absolutely irrelevant to prog metal - it is virtually impossible to for anyone with a semblance of objectivity.

Who's stopping YOU? But yes, I have very little patience for something so obviously paying homage to Wall-era Floyd. Again, the only part of it that appeals to me is Petrucci's solo...an interesting context for his characteristic lightning fast shred.

Metallica are a garage thrash band at very best. Their ability died when they got rid of or lost Dave Mustaine and his influence over immediate future albums. I can't hum the melody of "the Spirit carries on" Huh?

the first time I heard 'train of thought', I immediately thought about Metallica.
And Dream Theater covered the whole 'master of puppets' during a gig in Barcelona, which says a lot about their influences.

Clearly DT's members are FAR superior to Metallica in terms of technical ability, but I actually see Metallica as pretty similar to DT in terms of always changing their approach to music. With each new DT album you hear a new, unified sound. I&W was a jazzy progressive masterpiece. Awake was dark and moody. Falling Into Infinity was a little alt rock mixed with prog. Scenes From a Memory was an epic storytelling experience. Six Degrees was really emotional and experimental. Train of Thought was a heavy metal punch to your face. Octavarium was catchy and upbeat. Systematic Chaos was at times gothic metal. Black Clouds was filled with long, captivating epics. A Dramatic Turn of Events is really melodious and mood-centered. Metallica does the same thing. Not many bands have that ability. Again, with the exception of Load and Reload and Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, all of Metallica's albums sound completely different from one another. When you throw in the innovative things they've done like S&M and the Some Kind of Monster documentary, which is the best music documentary I've ever seen (despite the music of the album being made), and Metallica is certainly a band that is trying things generally unheard of for a metal band. They've always changed themselves and pushed the envelope; isn't that sort of what prog is about?

Since my girlfriend, as a barbarian revenge, has entered me in a "Meet Justin Bieber" competition and I have been shortlisted as one of five from Scotland; I would like to suggest his nasty, nasty "Under The Misteltoe" album. Yes, I got this album as a free download of this nasty piece. Something I will pass up on.

It's all different opinions - they are just opinions though. I very much doubt that the Metallica guys ever sat down together and said - "let's be progressive". I personally ( and I mean personally here guys ) don't attach any importance whatsoever to Metallica. Black Sabbath, Budgie, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Krokus, Anthrax etc etc etc I love and I find that their music - to my mind has been very influential. To my way of thinking Deep Purple was far far more important in influenicing a band like Dream Theater than Metallica ever were.
Metallica capitalised on bringing thrash metal into the mainstream sure - yes they did. They did nothing, to me, more unique than that - they poppified thrash.
The truth of their prowess is today - that they are almost a 1 or a 2 hit wonder - their creativity was so stunted that they have never been able to equal or get close to 2 or 3 albums that admittedly were good in what they were trying to achieve.
In music I look for melody - definately can't hum a Metallica song. I like for nuances - changing moods, I look for the dramatic. Or I look for virtuosity. I love prog almost purely because prog boasts greater intelligence than mind numbing pop music and I enjoy prog because the instrumentalist actually work on their skill and accordingly for their money. To me there is a vast difference between a Van Gough or a Picasso to a cartoon comic strip relating to art. |

according to your argumentation, a band like Paradise Lost should be in PA.

Well, all of those things apply but are in addition to what was already stated, such as odd time signatures, nonstandard song structures, influence on future prog artists, etc. Metallica certainly isn't "progressive metal", but I think the prog-related tag fits, especially after reviewing what the official PA definition of "prog-related" is. I'm not familiar with Paradise Lost, besides hearing them a few years ago when I took my gf at the time to a Nightwish concert, so I can't really comment on their worthiness for PA.

Guys - simplistically I kinda think this has become quite funny and thus entertaining. I luv Weather Report, Di Miola, John Miles, 10cc, Sabbath, Budgie, DT, Anubis, Haken., Yes, Genesis, Maiden, Gravy Train, Pavlovs Dog. What Ima tryin to say is I luv a broad spectrum of music. Again Metallica were and always will be a Garage band and NME agrees with that. Fight it all ya will it makes me smile. Have at it and all ya do is make me smile sum more.
Give me Sean Filkins new album and I revell in the prog I hear. Spam me with Ride the Lightning and I kinda think that you r funny. Humor me sum more - please.

Sure there is. It's just that the statement "Simple music is simple" is not very useful...

I do not think recognizing Judas Priest's role in the transformation of metal would necessarily be spreading the wings of PA but then again, it's not up to me.

Quite right, it doesn't. But the mention does reference the progression of metal and by extension Metallica (and even if, where, when , how Metallica applies) to prog metal. It is really just an en passant reference. Does all this make Lou Reed prog rock / prog metal / thrash etc? Oh yes, does he sing in tune on the Loutallica thing? Speaking of wandering off topic, but still potentially in the worst album category, if not for the year in question... if one were to get really silly and have a laugh (if that is allowed in these hallowed portals of serious music) try listening / analysing Pat Boone's influence on metal) - he did an album of lounge versions of classic 80s metal (I've not heard it and would like someone to listen to it for me..). I liked metal for it's humour (both intended and otherwise) anyway. Around the time of all the Live Aid albums the Ronnie Dio propelled metal version Hear 'n' Aid title was both relevant and amusing...

I've listened to Pat Boone's in a Metal Mood, and you know what? I prefer his rendition of Holy Diver. There, I said it.
