This poll isn't centered on any singular concept or connection, just a bunch of bands, mostly relatively newer (1980's or later) and most have garnered a lot of critical praise. I was wondering what you fine folks thought on the situation. There's some ambient, some trip-hop, some alt-country/folk rock, and some new wave-style stuff in there. What do you guys think I should dig into first?

XTC but hard to say where to start.  I got on board with English Settlement.  
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I was gonna vote for XTC (cos I loves 'em)but thought they might be a tad too 'sprightly' for you. An unlisted album that I think would intrigue you is Time of Orchids Sarcast While

So I voted for Pavement (who I've never even heard) just to see if the accusations of 'Fall wannabes' is warranted? (The latter being possibly my favourite band of all time)

I've heard Dear God and I liked it a lot. I've heard that both English Settlement and Skylarking are wonderful records.

The Fall? I've heard their name tossed about, but I've never sat down and listened. Most of this list was made through various online critics (Pitchfork Media, George Starostin, Mark Prindle, AllMusic Guide (just for chuckles), RYM, Rolling Stone Magazing (for a few more chuckles), Wilson and Alroy, an various little-known web reviewers) all in a mass conjunction. 

I would've added Nine Inch Nails to the list, but all of Reznor I can recall is listening to the original version of 'Hurt' and hating it in comparison with Johnny Cash's cover.And naw, I'm not one of the guys that loves the song by itself. I was a big fan of most of the American Recordings covers (his duets with Nick Cave, especially).

If you like Dear God, the rest of the album has some really nice and thought/mood provoking songs.  Grass and Dying come to mind in particular.  The rest not quite as good as the set of Settlement.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I'll be the first to vote for Autechre. They have been around for nearly twenty years now and their early kusic still sounds futuristic to me. A whole new level of electronica.

What about Automatic for the People and Murmur? From what I've heard, LRP, AFTP, and Murmur are all their best. I wouldn't know, it's why I'm asking.

If you don't have Massive Attack's Mezzanine, you really need to get it. It's much better than anything I've heard from Lamb (who falls in the same category, from the bands in your list).

I don't know why AFTP is rated so highly. There's only a few songs on it I really care about. Out of their 90's albums I would say Up is the best as a whole.

Murmur is great, so is every other album they made in the 80's.

Don't avoid. It's a great minialbum. I can understand that the titletrack isn't everyone's bag, but I love the whole thing. So much infact I'd reccomend it as a starting point.

I'll second the vote for Murmur. It has this special vibe to it that I can hardly describe. All the songs seems to fit. I personally love Automatic for the People. It has a less vibe of alt rock, more of a slower lyrical mood. There are more than a few songs that are sort of reminiscient of the past or talking of death or dying. The last 3 songs are fantastic.
