Don't really care about who the best drummer is, but the thread title did make me smile. Without offering the option of 'other..' it's a bit like asking: "If you were to choose the best musician of all times, which member of Take That would it be? LOL"

Some of these drummers I don't get. The only reason some are as highly regarded as they are is because the band they're in is famous.

Danny Carey for me, slightly above Portnoy.

Portnoy is overrated rubbish.

imo.

All that tells me is that you have no understanding whatsoever relating to a drumkit or percussion.
Note that I didn't slam Bruford or anyone else - I merely stated the obvious. You however appear to be quite caustic relating to musicians that you don't like.

If Portnoy was ever put in the same room as Bruford then he should sit quietly and study Bruford and perhaps he might learn something different.

Funny thing that I struggle to relate that comment to me even though I obviously made it. Sounds now like I was admonishing a naughty child or something.
Portnoy is an excellent drummer and if he wasn't I wouldn't own so many Neal Morse and Dream Theater albums but he is a bit 'one dimensional' and that is the problem. He probably could still learn more if he wanted although the comment about Bruford is somewhat redundant as he is now retired sadly.

Bill Bruford, no doubt hands down, plus he is hot and very funny. Also Fripp gave him carte blanche to play whatever he wanted as long as it was not what he learned playing while in YES etc. LOL

We know you prefer/love Ringo's nose to Bill's mouth-agape expression when he plays. LOL

Dave Weckl if he was on the list.  Simply the best - a virtuoso in every sense.  Someone said he was jazz not prog but some of the work he and Chick Corea have done is quite proggy.

Otherwise, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, John Bohnam, and Mike Giles.  Each different in their skill set and unique in their approach.  Honorable mentions for Bruford, Collins, and Portnoy.

Ringo Starr, Alex Van Halen, and Tommy Lee don't belong on this list IMO.  And if we're excluding jazz, why is Buddy Rich on the list?

I agree, but that list should include Lars Ulrich, too. He can drum fast (but erratically), but he's a one-trick-pony. Plus, Nick Mason is only on the list because he's in Floyd.
