I've been seeing how people talk about Genesis on this site, so I'm wondering about how opinions fall with the albums.
So please say what your favorite Genesis album is, and if you'd like to explain, please do. It can be any Genesis album, be it studio, live, compilation, box set, or whatever.

Second's Out

It was the first album I'd ever heard from the band. My Brother-In-Law bought it for me having seen them play earlier that year (1977) at Earl's Court.

I played it to death in my mid-teens and it literally changed my life (at least musically) Wink

My favorite Genesis album is probably Duke.  I can't really explain myself :\

That's quite interesting. Although that one isn't *my* favorite, it's a pretty spectacular batch of performances. I especially like the versions of Supper's Ready and Los Endos.

It's my favorite as well. It never seems to get the attention it deserves really.

What the hell?  Tops, anything from Tresspass to Wind And Wuthering.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I would say two of them:

1.- Foxtrot: Not a single week track, of course, Watcher of the Skies, Can-Utility and the Coastliners and the epic Supper's Ready are their peak.

2.- Nursery Cryme: Excellent album, probably Musical Box is their best song ever, but Giant Hogweed, Fountain of Salmacis and the sarcastic and dark humor of  Harold the Barrell are almost in the same level.

Most people prefer "Selling England by the Pound", but even when still a masterpiece, they had lost that mysterious  and haunting atmospheric sound with a dark atmospheres that surrounds as a thick mist that had been their trademark, I love the 5 Gabriel albums (Also ATotT and W&W), but Foxtrot, NC and Trespass, are my favorites by far.

NC. It's the only Genesis album that deserves the masterpiece status, IMO.

Honestly, none are perfect.  STBTP has the most "great" songs, but also some of the worst.
Foxtrot is overrated.

Most people simple mean by "overrated" that *in their opinion* the album should have a lower average rating. I fully understand that, and yes, they have lost something after NC and Foxtrot. I remember not being wildly enthusiastic about SEBTP when I heard it for the first time,  while Trespass, NC and Foxtrot where blowing me away, so to say.

For me personally, though: as years went by I, I started to appreciate SEBTP more and more, because of the matureness of the material and the subtle colorings and shades. These days SEBTP is my favorite Genesis album.
