I must say that I had been critical of Mr. Wilson in the past few years, the last PT record, and the 3rd Blackkfield.... both almost forgettable in reference to their other works.  I think the record is brilliant.  I was not expecting to like it, but it is nearly perfect in too many ways.  It is the album I think SW has been wanting to make all along, it just took this journey to get to it.  Bravo effort.  5 stars.

My one lament is that he gave the extra tracks to folks that invested in the Blu Ray edition of it.  As it was, I purchased the vinyl, as I have on all of Mr. Wilson's projects.  With Insurgentes, Wilson awarded the vinyl purchasers with extra tracks, which I applaud.  After all, it is all about vinyl and ANTI Ipod, right?  Well, you can get the bonus tracks to the new record another way without getting Blu Ray edition, that is, via iTunes.  Really?  You want me to download some inferior quality 320kbp file to listen to on my tube amps?  Oh really?

That is my only gripe, and I would wager SW would agree.  It is pathetic but true, and surely driven by markets... oh well.

Great record none the less.  Bravo.

Holy Cow!  The deluxe version came in the mail today.  That thing will never fit into my CD case. LOL

I think I'll listen to it first on a i-pod just to tick Steven off. Tongue

Cool, blu ray authoring by Ray Shulman.  Haven't made it to that yet.

Three listens so far for me, all the way through each time and I'm loving it more the more I listen to it. I've been playing a lot of Fallout lately, so I just let this play on through while I'm at it. It's definitely the progiest work he's done in a while.

Right now, I'm not really enjoying the new album too much. But, it's getting better with each listen and certain parts are starting to stand out more. I'll probably have a clear opinion by the end of the week.

This arrived:

I thought I had ordered the vinyl release instead when I saw the box it came in.  Well, one listen to the CDs and no blu ray view yet.  It's a really nice box set.  And of course the music is good.  Lots of interesting guests.

Borrowed my brother's copy of this album, and it sounded great.  Probably more impressed by this compared to my first listen to Insurgentes.  Who knows what that will mean in the long run.

For anyone with the deluxe edition, how's the third disc entitled "The Map"? I tried asking someone earlier, but apparently they're far too cool to answer... ; P

For some reason Steve left off some of the best tracks from the Insurgentes sessions. The 78 & Puncture Wound especially were much better than all the tracks on the actual album besides the self titled one, imo at least.

Puncture Wound should have definitely made it on the actual album; just a great track.

I too am curious about this third disc...

the 78 is fantstic, but i was too slow to get the book version of insurgentes. however i got the super cool red 7" harmony korine single, with the 78 as b-side. the black vinyl version is still for sale in burning shed i think.

i agree the insurgentes bonus disc is fantstic, and you can download it in WAV, for free, on SW's soundcloud page:

about "the map"... i think it's a nice bonus. the tree first tracks are great i think, one is "home in negative" that can also be found on SW's soundcloud. but i think SW did the right thing not to include them on the album.

"raider acceleration" is a somewhat jazzy freakout, not really my thing but still quite cool. "black dog throwbacks" is an ambient piece, very good. then there's the demo version of "raider II" which is nice and interesting to compare with the album version.

Not having been impressed by anything I've heard with mr. Wilson at the steering wheel, I must say I really liked this album.

Mr. Wilson is almost always at the steering wheel.  Name your worst.

As someone who has never really loved Porcupine Tree, I enjoyed this album.

I've made it through about half a dozen complete listens and there is a lot to love on this album.  Moments of sheer transcendence (Deform to Form a Star, for one) and a couple of sags (Postcard, for one).  Insurgentes was my introduction to Wilson so it's gonna be hard to beat that for sheer impact, but GfD just might be more accomplished.

I'll keep listening.... Big smile

I just bought it today, the 'regular' version.

I like it alot. Not nearly as rockin' as Porcupine Tree, but still a very good album. Beats Insurgentes by miles (or kilometers, depending on where you live Tongue )

The Map is on the youtubez for anyone who is interesting in hearing it. Personally I would have replaced No Part of Me with Fluid Tap and coincidentally they happen to be the exact same length.

Am I the only one who finds the over use of this expression very irritating?
