GY!BE spearheaded the whole Post Rock movement.
Spocks Beard rehashed Symphonic Rock.
Tough choice |
No, easy choice - Spock's Beard
......and I think you'll find that Talk Talk were there a lot earlier with the "Post Rock" thing (whatever it means).
|
Spirit Of Eden was Proto-Post Rock for sure, and an incredible album. But GY!BE are the main influence for most of todays Post Rock. |
I've had this argument with a few people before. Talk Talk, Slint, and Tortoise are definitely full on post rock IMO. First wave post rock. 10 minute crescendos are not the defining factor of the genre |
I agree with that.
But they are what most Post Rock bands have emulated.

I'm usually more in the mood for Spock's Beard. GY!BE is good, nonetheless.
I vote for the Beard.

GY!BE they are just fantastic. A little depressing but WOW! they pack a lot of punch for a couple string instruments a few guitars and a drum.

If Spocks Beard wins this poll, I will lose all my faith in this website. I REALLY wish i could vote. Godspeed is by far more progressive. When i listen to Spocks Beard, its music to entertain me in my passing time, something to drown out the annoying noises of my world. When i listen to Godspeed, I sit down and savor every note in a cognitive trance... Godspeed turns into a day defining experience consuming your thoughts with their dynamic soundscapes and soaring peaks. Progarchives and Godspeed fans, please dont disappoint me. PLEASE!

You don't have to snark at me every time I comment on what I vote for in a poll. Honestly, it makes you sound like a whiner.

I severely doubt all those people who voted for Spock's Beard have actually heard GYBE!, it's the only explanation.

This post illustrates a huge portion of what is wrong with a lot of "prog" listeners, especially on this site. You guys really need to drop this moronic "what did this band invent that was never done before" fetish, it's incredibly misleading and limiting. "Post rock" isn't even a remotely innovative concept anyway (nor a well-defined one).

Will anybody win a cup? I don't see a reason for discussions of this kind specially when there's a poll between two totally different bands. I have voted SB mainly because of SNOW that's an album that I love but I don't care about who will win or loose because there's nothing to win or loose. Does anybody remember YES vs GENESIS last year?

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
