Hey!
I'm really into experimental and more or less ambient post-rock or metal. Suggest some albums for me to check out!
Here's what i have:
  • Explosions in the sky - Those who tell the truth...
  • Explosions in the sky - The earth is not a cold dead place
  • Explosions in the sky - All of all sudden i miss everyone
  • Mono - You Are There (ON ORDER)
  • Pelican - Australasia
  • Pelican - Pelican
  • The Pax Cecilia - Blessed are the bonds

Of those, i like Explosions in the Sky best. Have not yet heard the mono album, though, but it looks awesome!

I'll check them out! Not sure if i like growl-type vocals, but if the music is fantastic, i can live with "less fantastic" vocals.

My favourite of their albums are Oceanic and Panopticon, but depending on who you talk to any of Isis' works come highly recommended.

If you like Explosions in the Sky I'd check out Do Make Say Think.  You, You're a History in Rust and Other Truths are probably their best albums.

The music is more than fantastic in ISIS.  The vocals usually take a side-stage.

Along those lines, check out Cult of Luna, Intronaut, Cloudkicker, Indukti, Neurosis, Mouth of the Architect, and National Sunday Law.

And for less heavy post-rock/ambient, Godspeed You! Black Emperor are a must.  I would also recommend Gifts from Enola, God Is an Astronaut, Sigur Rós, Do Make Say Think, Aereogramme, Red Sparowes, Dirty Three, Mogwai, Russian Circles, *shels, and Tera Melos.  Oh, and maudlin of the Well's latest output, which is free to download.

Why is nobody mentioning A Silver Mt. Zion? An absolutely heavenly band, would say some of their output is even better than Godspeed.

Godspeed You Black Emperor is a great recommendation though. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven or Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada are probably their best.

I bought Sigur Ros "Takk" yesterday and i have Mono "You are There" on order.
In a few weeks i'll check out Isis, Godspeed you black emperor, Red sparowes, Mogwai, 65daysofstatic and more... Can't wait! But for now i have big pile of albums to listen through before that Embarrassed

If you enjoy some psych elements in your music, I wholeheartedly recommend Maserati´s album Pyramid of the Sun. It´s still post-rock but played in a way that, at least to me, is totally original and successful. 
You get all the usual trades from this genre - but also a very healthy dose of electronics to boot.

Since no one has mentioned them yet, try this free stuff by The Monroe Transfer who take most of their influence from Godspeed You! Black Emperor but definitely aren't limited to that.

if you want something post rocky on the faster side....try the bands "lite" and "that f**king tank".....soz about the swear word.....but hey thats what they're called!Smile

Besides what's already been posted here, I'd recommend the following:
1. Agalloch (mix of post-metal, black metal, and folk)
2. If These Trees Could Talk (only have one album but it's quite amazing)
3. Caspian (very fuzzy and blissful kind of post-rock)
4. Balmorhea (similar to Mono)
5. Boards of Canada (ok so it's technically not post-rock but their last album is pretty darn close!)
6. Exxasens (instrumental post-rock/post-metal)
7. Maybeshewill (also instrumental post-rock/post-metal)
8. Meniscus (talented band from Australia, not sure what else to say)
9. This Will Destroy You (traditional post-rock on their first album, very dark and minimalistic on their second)
10. Tides from Nebula ( instrumental post-rock/post-metal, first album is definitely better than the second)
11. Woods of Ypres (similar to Agalloch)
12. Hammock (I cannot say enough great things about this band. If you're into otherworldly shoegaze/ambient music, then this is your band. Pure genius.)

Btw, Isis' last album, Wavering Radiant, features more clean vocals than growls. If you want to get one of their albums, definitely get that one. It's truly a masterpiece.

Hmmm pretty much everything I wanted to recommend was already said. I'll recommend Oceansize, who are influenced by post-rock. Frames is their masterpiece. 

Some other post-rock bands that I'm a big fan of are Destroyalldreamers and Crippled Black Phoenix. DAD are instrumental and meld shoegaze into their music. CBP take the Godspeed route, but with vocals. 

Minsk are also great, if you're looking for post-metal stuff but that's a whole different deal. 

And if you're going to order a Mono album order either Hymn to the Immortal Wind, which is their masterpiece in my opinion, or their latest orchestral live album, which is quite astonishing as well.

Nice Wings, Icarus's self titled opus is free to download and a favourite of mine. The Fierce and The Dead are also fantastic. For something heavier, can't go wrong with Cloudkicker, Neurosis or ISIS as already mentioned in this thread. For something a bit different and rather beautiful, Esmerine have a pretty laid back sound and make post-rock without the usual instrumentation.

If you want to get some brand new stuff, I recommend the two stand-out post-rock albums of the year, Long Distance Calling's self titled and Grails' Deep Politics. If you're into Math Rock, try the new Battles album "Gloss Drop". 

If on the other hand you want to hear the very first albums of post-rock, definitely check out Slint's" Spiderland" (one of my favorites of all time) or anything by Talk Talk.

For straight up post rock might as dive right into the deep end and get everything made by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Glad to see you have Pelican Big smile  try Isis for more metal, post metal. If you like it/can handle more abrasive stuff get Cult of Luna, awesome post metal.

Agalloch was mentioned, they are a black metal influenced post rock and they are brilliant. Start with "The Mantle"

OH! Also get "Inventions for the New Season" by Maserati. Warm, spacey type post rock.

I've been in love with Long Distance Calling's self titled album, need to check out Grails.

As for another album, check out And So I Watch You From Afar's album Gangs, I've been addicted to this one for a few days now. Sick band, loving this album.
