Topic: Your All-Time Favorite Drummers Posted: July 09 2011 at 20:07
I would assume that this thread has been done before but I searched for it and couldn't find anything, so here we are! List your top 20, 10, 5, maybe you just have one drummer that does it for you, by which you compare all others to. Feel free to explain why your number one is number one. This list isn't confined to prog drummers, even though they usually tend to be the best drummers by default IMO. Here's my top 20 (it was extremely difficult to put these in any order):
1. Billy Cobham 2. Zach Hill 3. Jon Theodore 4. Bill Bruford 5. John Bonham 6. Ali Jackson 7. Mitch Mitchell 8. Elvin Jones 9. Vinnie Colaiuta 10. Chris Cutler 11. Alphonse Mouzon 12. Nick Mason 13. John Marshall 14. Tony Williams 15. Vince Rogers 16. Dennis Chambers 17. Michael Shrieve 18. Deantoni Parks 19. Phil Selway 20. Robert Wyatt
Billy Cobham is my number one for a number of reasons. His sheer power and ability to improvise and steal time are unmatched. He gives you power when you want it, and a few seconds later he'll play so quietly that you can hardly hear him, but somehow still keeps all of the energy intact. Not only that, but he can also be the funkiest, in the pocket, straight rhythm player I've ever heard. His work with Mahavishnu Orchestra, and his one on one improvisations with John McLaughlin in particular, is why he'll probably be my favorite drummer forever! A true master of his instrument.

For future reference, you need to manually change the search settings or it only shows threads from the last 6 months
I don't want to make a full list, but Christian Vander, Chris Cutler, Jaki Liebezeit, and Mani Neumeier would be near the top, probably along with some particular favourite metal drummers (Gene Hoglan?).
