I just can't believe how insanely far musical instrument technology has come these past 5 years or so. I remember thinking I was bad ass with my casio cz-101 synthesizer and boss dr rhythm drum machine back in the day and now all these vst's are sounding so realistic it's unbelievable. The main thing that just blows me away is the roland guitar synthesizer. Does anyone have this? It can make any guitar sound like anything from a saxophone to a  flute. Imagine if we had this back in the 90's! 

Anyway, this thread doesn't really have a deep meaning, I was just interested in your thoughts and flashbacks. The musical equipment we had in the 90's and even early 2000's is quite embarrassing compared to what we can do now. I'm sure we all remember buying tons of stomp boxes that we used with pedal boards. Who would have thought we'd have a machine that was like all those stomp boxes all in one pedal.

Is that one of the new Junos? (Roland needs to step off it's raping of old classic names, by the way)

I think a lot of synth technology is getting incredible. The things the new Kronos can do...

Then again, a lot of it is packaged into sh*tty devices like the microKorg, so whatever. Still lots of neat synthesis methods going on.

I have a microKorg and for the most part, I am not impressed. What really sounds like crap now is the casio cz series synths. Casio should just call it a day now that these vst's can get you sounds worth thousands for very little to nothing. Every Casio keyboard I've ever heard makes everything you play sound like cheesy Nintendo sounds.

One thing I am skeptical technology will ever achieve is a realistic hammond organ sound. I have played a few VST's and it's very hard to get a good sound without tons of popping noises and screeching.

I know it's mostly frowned upon by musicians to use virtual instruments, but how many people can affords prophets, minimoogs, mellotrons, grand pianos, junos, etc? Technology is a godsend for musicians on really tight budgets who can barely afford a week's grocery bill.

Or how about this?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI5Gg2-mhmU  you just type words and play with your midi controller and you can make it sound like you're conducting a choir!

Oh yeah East West do some great things with VSTs. Check out Vienna Synphonic Library, too. Thousands of samples of real instruments. If I remember right, they minimize transposing. They all play all of their notes.

Check out Nord Electros and the C2. I dunno if they do Hammonds, but they're great digital organs. Better be for $3,000.

Check out Arturia's V2 Collection. Tons of classic synths emulated. Not the real thing, obviously, but when the real thing goes for $50,000....

I have a guitar that has the 16 pin output for the Roland guitar synthesizers but haven't been able to afford the synth box............

What good does that do without the synth box? I am hopefully going to win a roland guitar synth in an intense auction on ebay tonight. Maybe if I get it, I'll make a video testing it out.

It does nothing without the synth box.  I didn't get it for that though, it's just a damn fine guitar.
