The fact that 43% of the ratings for that album are 5* seems to suggest that this is just your opinion.

Yes, old news is old news, and I don't expect many would care about such lists, but.....

So true. DSotM just got overplayed. And LA Woman nearly made my list.

Hating St. Anger was the cool thing to do. I heard all the bashing and thought it had to be even worse than the 90's Metallica albums. When I finally heard it 2 years later I was reminded again of how much people who try to be cool piss me off. Especially when they jump on a bashwagon. By no means is it a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it.

It was an interesting read for me, if only to see how some of the 'other side' think.  And of course, what a predictable list of bands to interview, of course most of them are going to trash classic albums. And with, for the most part, some stunningly simplistic and shallow analysis at that. Shouldn't really call some of those 'interviews' 'analysis' either, really.

Still, I do agree that 'Pet Sounds' had a few songs that didn't blow me away, along with some stunners.

There are 8 ratings (now that you've added yours). 2 of the 5 star raters are active in this conversation, and the 2 1 star reviewers are active in this thread. Please don't pull out statistics when the N is so small and you're actively manipulating them.

If it works for you, go ahead and listen to it. That album sat unreviewed for a very long time before I put up my opinion. I personally think it's emperor's new clothes. People trying to fake being cool by pretending to like the most aversive music they can find.

The emperor's new clothes is an incredibly stupid and deeply offensive metaphor to apply to music (well, probably anything, to be honest, but that's a different topic). Where people got the idea that it's OK to claim that someone else must be lying when they like something you don't is beyond me. And I've always thought the story was more about even the rich and powerful emperor being scammed because of his vanity than the common people playing along because they're afraid of him, but whatever...

And I'm not terribly familiar with Naked City, but I find most of their output rather dull except for Leng T'che, but I'm a noise hipster.

Yeah, it's just lazy bandwagoning. I don't even like Metallica, but I'm willing to defend them on this one because everyone only jumps to that one because it was such a high profile release.

It's definitely not as bad as Garage Inc. or either of the Load albums.

I don't like Naked City. Based on all the reviews and descriptions and comparisons I've read about it, I SHOULD like it. But I just don't.

I'll take "Until it Sleeps" over tin-can, 9-minute dirges.

although I'd in most cases take neither.

It kind of does want to make me hear it just to judge for myself how bad it really is.  My luck, I'd probably like it.

Your opinion isn't rendered any more potent by mocking the tastes of others.

I wasn't mocking. Some people do, in fact, listen to certain music simply as a component of a personality and image they are creating for themselves. Some folks do this with reasonable intentions. But you can dive so deep that you lose touch with reality.

Leng Tche is at the far end of the spectrum at so many levels that making it work would have been a collossal achievement. The fact that the subject matter itself is on the extremes of human cruelty means that the piece is going to have to prove itself to me that it has earned drawing me in to a realm so dark. I don't want to be tortured personally. If there is something to be gained by exploring that piece of human experience, I'm willing to think about it.

And you must realize that if you say "I personally like representations of the extremes of human cruelty" some eyebrows are going to go up.

You were mocking, by saying something that other people obviously think is a masterpiece or near to one is "the most aversive music they can find."

Sorry bro but it's a good album.
