Two bands with acquired-taste singers, but while I can enjoy Geddy Lee's vocals, I can't Anderson's. And I like Rush's music much, much more than Yes'.

Interesting. If you´re using some pictures of most famost classical composers as your signature, one could wait you like Yes "much, much more" than Rush, simply because that´s Symphonic Prog yet!

I would think that an album such as Hemispheres is very symph sounding (hard rock/ symphonic prog). Many who like classical symponies will not care much for symphonic prog, anyway, or like symph particularlyy Teo loves classical and metal. Beethoven's Ninth is a favourite of mine, but I'm not much into symphonic prog (prefer classical symphonies). That said, I'm generally more into classical chamber music as well as chamber rock, so whatever. When I was 16, Yes' Fragile and Rush's Hemispheres were my favourite albums. I don't listen to much of tiether band anymore, but I guess I like them about equally. Actually, I'm more likely to listen to Rush. I think I will go with Rush (I do return to Caress of Steel now and then).

It's actually the opposite. For classical music (my first and foremost love), I want classical music. For rock, I want rock. Hybrids are not my thing. There's few composers who add rock elements to their music (mostly 20th century ones, whose music I enjoy but MUCH less than, say, "traditional" composers) and there's many bands who try to "classicize" their music, which I usually fail to enjoy. Genesis is an exception though.

I have a brother who is the same. Classical is his first love (mine too, actually), but he doesn't like rock fused with classical (or with jazz -- he dislikes jazz). He'll happily listen to Vivaldi followed by AC/DC. He despises Prog pretty much, though.

Jon's aren't really an acquired taste. They're a little gay, but rather inoffensive. Geddy's vocals are shreiky, and I could totally understand somebody not liking them

I'm so mad that you enjoy a certain combination of noises that I don't

I think that's logical. Not to put prog down, but when you discover the magic behind classical music, its art, its literature, its meaning, its structure, its harmonic/melodic work, its thematic work, prog-rock with classical elements sounds like a poor man's version. Just as I don't want my classical music "simplified", I also don't want my rock music made any less ROCK. Right now, as I type, I'm adding some 30 classical music cds to my catalogue that I purchased in the last weeks. At the same time I'm listening to Evergrey's "The Inner Circle", a prog-metal album that rocks (before Evergrey became a poor man's Nickelback, if that's even possible ). I want my art as I knew it.

That´s exactly my case. I could enjoy Rush music until Geddy starts to sing.
Another thing which overtops Yes over Rush are (almost perfect) backing vocals. That´s a pity that Rush haven´t this one.

Both brilliant, both have given me years of pleasure, but, ultimately, it has to be Yes.

I like them both a lot for different reasons. Both bands have talented members, write great lyrics and have released some of the most enjoyable, well crafted and historically essential progressive rock albums. I have both in my top five prog bands. When I'm in the mood for something whimsical with a touch of spiritulity I listen to Yes. When I'm in the mood for something heavy with a touch of social commentary I listen to Rush.

First of all a really dumb poll. Both bands are timeless and yet quite different. They are equally my two all-time favorite bands. I would go out of my way to see either in concert. It's kind of saying who's better, Bach or Beethoven? Ok, Bach came first as well as Yes, but that just makes them older-no more.

I agree when somebody compares Genesis and KC or VdGG and Pink Floyd but not in this case. Here Yes wins easily like Bach or Mozart would win Vs Ravel or Gershwin )))
