Not surprisingly the Ravel orchestration is significantly more tasteful and less pompous than the near unlistenable ELP version.

1. I like the ELP version.  2. I find most classical music to be boring as all hell, so it is the added rock that usually makes it listenable for me.

I always found Mussorgsky to be banal. In my opinion, you're not really missing much.
