There are a few similarities. "A Passion Play" reminds me a bit of Genesis, due to the thematic material that Tull uses on that album. They both had lead singers who also play the flute, and dressed in costumes. They both refer to medieval lore in their lyrics, though Tull goes further with it. Personally I favor Genesis, but comparing them does not seem like all that big a stretch to me. In fact, I think that they are two Prog bands that are quite similar to one another.

Two highly song oriented prog rock bands, if anything while Yes and ELP had longer instrumental sections. I think giselle means that something like Marillion v/s IQ is more comparable but it doesn't have to be THAT similar.

I'm not against comparisons, but in the case of these two, they are completely different kinds of bands. If for instance you compared Yes and Genesis, I could relate to the question. But Jethro and Genesis? No, not for me, I don't think they're comparable, there's no relation other than them both being rock groups. The question is simple enough if you don't need a rationale other than liking or disliking, preferring or not preferring. Apples and oranges relate to each other better than that - not like apples and coconuts for instance. |
You can compare them by the amount of strong music they put out each year. That's why I pick Tull

Hard to compare. I like Tull but I'd go for Genesis if I had a gun to my head.

JT... TAaB and Aqualung beat any Genesis album, although I seem to be in the minority that thinks so.

Genesis by miles. Stand Up, Aqualung, and TAAB are all masterpieces, but Genesis is my favourite prog band, and I'd consider everything up to The Lamb/ATOTT a masterpiece

Yes, that's my vote and my own rationale, too. Well, JT is my all-time fave album.

One of the funniest messages in PA... ever!!!
(Oh, by the way, how on Earth can anyone find JT's repertoire monotonous? One may not like it to much but label it as monotonous... well... oh, it's OK, after all.)

Two of the very best - but Genesis for me.
While TAAB and APP can match Genesis in their prime (71-78) nothing else really can. If I made a combined top 10 - Genesis would hold 7or 8 of those positions.

Genesis. But if I'm out in the deep woods in front of a bonfire with a beer in my hand as I had been quite often as a young adult, then they approach parity.
