If you're young (young being defined as.... shall we say, under 25?) and a musician, then why not share with us what you play, how "good" you are, if you do it professionally or plan to do it professionally, etc....... I play keyboards, and I'm working towards my grade 8 piano for next year..... The aim is to get into the Royal College of Music (London) to get a degree in composition..... and then who knows what? A career in musicking awaits! |

I'm 18 and I'm a self taught guitarist and bassist, I've been playing for a little more than a year. I've only gotten two lessons before, they were both one-offs with musicians in town (Tosin Abasi while touring with Animals as Leaders and Alex Bois from Periphery.) I've gotten some pretty nice compliments from them regarding my playing ability for how short of time I've actually been playing, so I guess I'm not bad.
I made a video of me covering the first few minutes of a Periphery song if that would be any indication of my ability. I started learning this song a little more than a week ago and it's about 15 minutes total so I'm hoping to have the whole thing learned in the upcoming months. I don't go to school for music but I'm hoping I could eventually find enough like-minded musicians to form a band, or I can at least learn to use some audio software to record guitar and bass and program the drums in if I can't.

Hi! I am 19 and a musician on the side, as it were, being an illustration student first and foremost (can I plug it here? Might as well, hope you don't mind! http://eleanorwinter.blogspot.com/ ).
I play Classical guitar, hammered dulcimer, and oud. I play the guitar to a reasonable competent standard, and the other two well enough to play in the World Music Ensemble at my uni (which, by the way, is really fun!!). I am also trying to learn bagpipes. Ha. In the future, I want to be an illustrator (and possibly maths tutor), but I really enjoy playing these instruments and want to continue playing. I like the idea of recording things for people - I have already recorded some hammered dulcimer for a friend's demo! But as for professional stuff...well...I don't hold out any hope of making a living from my playing, I doubt I'll ever be good enough anyway. Good luck with your plan, it sounds great! Studying composition sounds fascinating. What kind of compositional career do you aspire for? Writing for film? Your own band? I hope it goes well! |

I'm not an electric guitarist, but for all I know that seems pretty good for a year! I've been playing Classical for about 7 years now...and still can't play electric guitars very well at all :( It's the plectrums I don't get. What do I do with this thing?? Good luck with your future plan! I'd recommend getting weekly lessons if you can. With a good teacher they're really fun, too :) |

Thank you for the kind words! Classical is a style I would like to learn to incorporate into my own playing and I would definitely need lessons of some sort for that. I know my university offers them but I don't know if I can take them without being a music major...
Heh, I mostly play lead so I do use the pick a lot, but I would say I spend nearly as much time with the pick in my mouth as in my hand because I like to alternate between traditional guitar picking and fingerpicking/tapping pretty frequently. I have Tosin Abasi to thank for that I guess, he's my guitar idol and he spends just as much time using his pick as not. I want to develop a style of my own that reduces the need of using a pick to only when absolutely necessary (for tremolo picking or something you can't do without one) and relies more heavily on fingerpicking, hybrid picking, tapping, and guitar percussions.

There is a Classical tremolo technique. I don't know how well it would work on electric guitars, but....well...I don't see why not! It's really hard, though. Really hard to get consistent  |

At 25 I guess I just qualify. I play bass, though not to any degree of proficiancy, and am just starting to learn to play the clarinet and will move on to saxophone once I've got a good grounding in the former. I guess at some point I might add guitar to that. Once I have the software sorted out on this nice new computer of mine I intend to start recording my own stuff, and it'll be in whatever style I feel like at the time.

I am 19 and am a mostly self taught guitarist (I took lessons for a year when I was 13 and also learned some from relatives some of whom play semi-professional bluegrass and country) I don't consider myself a great player, I am certainly not a very technical player as I mostly focus on creativity rather than technical ability. I can do most techniques and know my scales but I am not huge on repiticious exercises or learning songs wrote from tab. I prefer to write and sing my own songs (my singing is very Dylan if you get my meaning) as well as covering songs of others but never note for note. Recently I have only been focusing on my acoustic guitar specifically on finger picking (folk style not classical) as well as developing a acoustic tapping technique possibly trying to move into a Kaki King or Maps and Atlases influenced style.
I also play bass but do not consider myself an expert by any means.

I'm about to turn 20, and I play mostly classical and jazz guitar. I mostly write my own modern classical compositions, and I really like playing jazz improv in a Brazilian style. I've been playing for about ten years now, and I'm mostly self-taught, but I did take lessons for classical technique a few years ago. I suppose I'm good enough to play for people and not seem pretentious or anything, but I don't usually because I'm very shy. I'd love to be a professional composer or even a studio musician or anything, really.
But, I also love computers, so I'm going to school for computer forensics because it seems like a smarter career plan.

I played piano for quite a few years doing formal lessons, then grew entirely bored of that. For the past two years I've been playing guitar, mostly focussing on ambient stuff nowadays. I'd love to be a professional musician but I don't really see that happening in all honesty.

I'm 16, and guitar is my main instrument! I've been playing for about 2 years and a half. I can play bass too, and I'm looking forward to buying a piano/keyboard this summer!!
I'm not studying/planning on studying music (I would find it boring..) so I just create/play for myself! But since a month or two I've been wanting to start creating/recording my music... so this will be interesting!! :) |

I'm a 23 year old Bassist, Vocalist, and Synth player. I play all three in Thought Machine (I'm sure a lot of you know this already from my signature and avatar haha), which is a progressive rock band. I am also just play bass in an instrumental Fusion/Zeuhl band currently named The Lake City Boys (its what we're calling it for now anyways). LCB doesn't have any songs recorded yet but hopefully soon!

22 year old...thank god I made it so I plug my musics! I play drums/percussions, some piano, and can strum awkwardly on a guitar and make vocal sounds some people would call singing. I've been playing drums since the 4th grade, and a set since 9th grade. I'm in a few bands, but only two of them have recorded material. Both of those can be accessed in my sig. Feel free to listen and give feedback (especially if you think we are terrible). I honestly think I'm pretty smack dab in the middle with my abilities, with some moments of greatness. Technicality isn't my strong point though, but thats ok with me. Hopefully I can continue to learn to play the piano better and when I gets some money buy me a sax-o-mo-phone and try to learn that.
I mean, if I had my way, I'd own alot more instruments, I'd like to learn as many as possible, or at least try my hand at as many as possible. As for the future, I don't see much in terms of music. I would like to just record some stuff...maybe get myself a myspace for my own personal musics and if poked enough make some cd-rs of my material. As for those bands I'm in...if they take off I'll be the most surprised of all, but I don't think I'd complain.

I've been playing drums for about 7 years, guitar/bass for about 5 (still not very good)
 . I'm recording stuff on a digital four track at the moment and will probably self release these recordings. I haven't uploaded any of it to anything yet but when I do I'll let yous know.
