^ I only played Gold about ten years ago. Playing Fallout 3 and enjoying it. Meanwhile I completed Crysis 2 and - I'm glad I don't know Crysis 1, this way, I'm going to enjoy 1 a lot. |

Let's see... until my gaming PC's PSU went up, I'd been exploring the vast expanses that Fuel offers (really underrated gem of an experience), and playing Kingdom Hearts with ridiculously great image quality. Image is rendered at 3x supersampled 1024x768, held its 60fps as well... -sighs forlornly- Aside from that, I'm hooked on Ghost Recon for 3DS. Turn-based strategy from the creator of X-Com, and it shows. Plays like a future-war sci-fi rendition of Fire Emblem
So, how are you finding Homefront now that it's been out a while? Worth the sixty bucks, sir? And, which version did you get? GameInformer can't be trusted for reviews. They're the mouthpiece of the sales branch of GameStop, their 'editorial content' is regurgitated PR hype to sell the vast quantities of software the stores order. And, they gave Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door a -6-. Their reviews correlate with marketing budget, not quality, and even the most basic grasp of niche genres eludes them. Pretty pictures, though.

What? Recent? Crysis was a 2007 game. That's a time difference akin to that of the last wave of SNES games (1996) to the first wave of Playstation 2 games (2000). Crysis 2 is recent, but it has only moved backward, looking worse and playing like every generic shooter on the f**king planet. Anyway, been playing me some Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Mmm, frankenzombies. |

Crysis was never an amazing game in terms of gameplay, no. However, it did offer more open worlds with different approaches depending on your preference (and encouraged you to use the suit to your preferences). Crysis 2 offers you narrow corridors with the occasional blatantly-obvious arena. No, Crysis was never an amazing piece of game design. However, Crysis 2 lost both of the advantages that Crysis had. While Epic is delivering amazing tech demos of the latest updates to the Unreal engine, Crytek, a studio founded on delivering what are remarkably similar to tech demos, is giving us an ultra-generic shooter on the technology of yesteryear. //EDIT: But perhaps I should directly respond to your analogy. Every generation of games has its generation of graphical achievement. Or did, anyway, prior to this f**king generation of consoles. I don't think the original Crysis was so much of a leap in gaming graphics as Avatar was for the use of CGI in film. Compare to Oblivion, released just a year earlier. Sure, Crysis looked significantly better, but it was still really just incremental change. It wasn't even like Shenmue looked for its generation and hardware. I heard Homefront was only about 7 hours in gameplay? That seems awfully short.

That sounds about normal for an FPS these days. The last two Killzone games were about 8 hours, as are the Resistance games. |

The original Far Cry was brilliant though - and I had a lot of fun playing Crysis and Crysis: Warhead. And about Oblivion: I liked it, but as far as gameplay is concerned it was bordering ridiculous. Mindless hacking and slaying interspersed with Shakespearian dialogue ... I hope that for Skyrim they focus on reviving some of the elements that made Morrowind great - which, I guess, boils down to less obvious auto-levelling and more interesting quests. Unfortunately that's also what's most expensive to develop.

IGN wrote a spot about how CoD is ruining the FPS genre. Just happens to mention in passing how Crysis 2 went all generic COD clone on us. Also relates playing COD to being someone's bitch. Good for the laugh if nothing else.

^Well, it IS April, although I will say this: It seems every FPS is the same anymore. Some have cool stories or cool physics, etc., but most are just about the same thing.

And yet IGN nearly always rate COD games perfectly. Nearly as hypocritical as the article Crytek wrote about consoles holding back PC gaming whilst planning their sequel to their biggest game around consoles. I bought Black Ops, and it's the first COD game since 3 I bought and I had a sh*tload of fun playing it. It's unoriginal, repetitive and boring at times but still a blast to play with friends. And COD isn't really killing the FPS genre, they're releasing the same game every year and it's selling like crazy. You can hardly blame COD for the other companies which are jumping under the same banner to release similar games. Hell, even Bioware said they want COD's audience.

^And Bioware better not, in any way, screw with Mass Effect 3's core gameplay to attract some FPS junkies! I'd flip out if that happened!

Finally I did make it run... Starcfrat II is now out there and rolling... so far is quite interesting how the story goes on after the original game. Cool... very cool...

Not completely... but yes, I don't like them cross-platforming. Why they cannot just stick to the PC, I don't know.

Money. It's not just an issue of selling out, it's a matter of being able to fund a better game. You'll only get so much money from a given platform, and releasing it on multiple platforms gives you more revenue and therefore more cash to spend on development, which should bring in more cash. The real trouble is that there's a sort of going method of making a game for console and porting it to PC instead of the other way around. This isn't necessarily because developers hate PC but because consoles impose massive design restrictions. PC will always have plenty of buttons for doing what you want. It will always have the processing power to deliver the graphics you want. The consoles define what you can and can't do, so the ever-capable PC gets a port of the console version. |

Yep, that's pretty much it.
Although I was pissed off about Fable 2 not being on PC. Not that I played the first game but any desire to do so went with that news. I think Fable 3 has been ported to PC though. I gather there's a few minor differences between DA2 on PC and console? I've only played the PC version. I think though if Mass Effect 2 and Dragon 2 had been ported from PC to console, we may not have gotten so much FPS/Hack 'n' Slash type gameplay. |
