You are correct.
It's really just a gamble, I've seen tons of people come and go from the movie theater I work at,
and then there's been people there that have been there since I started.

I agree that they're more useful than the useless CV game, but the majority of the people hired at my old job were useless and we did interviews. But I think part of that was that they wanted to hire younger people because we're more likely to accept $8.50/hour and stay there and young people suck.

Everyone I work with is 20 or younger for the most part other than managers.
I think you're on to something with the young people comment.
Hell, I've been at my job for three years and have gotten a total in raises of 20 cents.. They don't see me complaining.

Personally (and I realise you cannot do this for everyone or every vacancy) but giving someone a month's trial/probation and avoiding stuff like CVs/Letters/Interviews, could work better.  Maybe a mini-Interview is useful here (especially as there will be lots of candidates).  Of course, the potential employee has to put the word out too that they're interested.

I know I can do a lot of the jobs I've applied for but not even getting an Interview means I cannot prove to them how good I'd be.

I'll just leave them to get some idiot instead.
