I agree. Also, I don't think Ian Anderson gets enough props for his acoustic guitar playing...

Of course, Steve Hackett is one of the most appreciated Prog Guitarists, but
I think he is underappreciated in music history in a way that people do not
think about.  I've followed sonic innovations that have happened in music due
to electronic instruments.  Hackett was a sonic innovator, on the level of
any other master synthesist.  You can hear this especially in the Lamb days
and afterwards.   He was creating sounds and textures that were truly unique.
I think you hear this strongest on the two albums he did after Gabriel left.
You can also hear some of this still remaining in the band, in the microtonal
aspects of ATTWT (the very short glissandos).

Agreed.  I'm always disappointed at how lists of the best guitarists tend to snub prog guitarists.  Rolling Stone is a great offender, particularly since they don't include Hackett at all (though thankfully honoring Fripp, Howe, and Gilmour) yet give the #10 slot to Kurt Cobain -- are they serious!?  In any case Mr. Hackett is a fantastic guitarist.  His work was the first thing that stood out to me when I heard Gabriel-era Genesis for the first time ("The Musical Box", to be precise).  The band was still good after he left, but there was definitely a great presence missing from the music after "Wind and Wuthering".  But he's gone on to great things in his solo career, where he's demonstrated his underestimated songwritings skills as well as musicianship.  "Voyage of the Acolyte" is a well-respected and much-enjoyed album in my collection.

BTW a few of you state that Jan Akkerman is underated.

He's not underated..... he is definitely rated...after all in 1973 he was voted "Best Guitarist in The World" by the readers of Melody Maker.

Not a bad compliment that.

The guy who played guitar for Flock of Seagulls. Yeah, yeah, they ain't prog, but I saw them a couple of times in concert and this guy reminded me of a poppy Steve Hackett. He was the only enjoyable part of the show (although the band had a few good songs in them).

Both great choices, the guy from Iceberg Max Sunyer did a really great blend of Symphonic Prog-Rock and Fusion, not the best in any of them but his mix of both styles was great. Being spanish I saw him a few times live and he could damn play.

rolling stone doesnt only underappreciate prog guitarrits the also underappreciate latin guitarrists, if you are gonna make a list of the 100 greatests guitarrists you must count all of them from classical acoustic music to prog to latin, rock and roll, for example if im correct the only latin guitarrists in the list is carlos santana who might be great but the likes of gustavo cerati (guitarrist and singer of soda stereo (the beatles of south america)) or omar rodriguez-lopez(guitarrist for The Mars Volta) are also in the same level but are not on the list.

Probably not even relevant, but I was amazed by how good Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is when I saw a recent video.
