Topic: Twitter in case of outage Posted: March 24 2011 at 21:12 |
My old admin roomie LIVES on Twitter and other systems, so he can be in immediate and direct contact with the system and fix, update and work any issues that arise. And in the 14 years I have known him, including the old Pacifier ISP, he was insanely good and efficient and down time ... was rarely ... if ever ... I can not even remember of any major ones ... an issue. And our music server had a total of one hour down time in 3 years, so we could upgrade the version of Unix on it.
So yeah, the ability to communicate would be a major issue, and Twitter would be nice, but someone has to do the code work for it.
But do we want it for internal use, or for external bruhaha? Edited by moshkito - March 24 2011 at 21:13 |

Hi,
I'm not sure that we would want this to go public, though that could be interesting ... but we might spend our time discussing the merits of progressive porn (new music this is, btw!), than using it for genuine purposes as you mention ...
(I'm hoping that I am on par with the thread idea ... seems foggy to me, but then after 3 right eye surgeries everything is foggy for me!)
But it would give PA a heck of a larger presence ... on the Internet.
Speaking of that ... I was thunking that we should have a trade out with Live 365 or the like, and present a feed where we can play lots of music, which would be the recomendations from this site ... and we should/could/would grab everyone's list, take out the doubles and play it ... the end result would probably the most varied and best "progressive" music show out there that is not the same as all the others out there ... boring and repetitive!
I would actually suggest doing our own ... at a low level stream, the licenses are not too expensive, and some advertising trade out could be appreciated. I used to have 25 feeds on my Unix Real Audio box, and never had issues with it and only once did it bump someone when it had 30 feeds, and in my show the average listener was there for over 30 minutes, on account that I did hour long shows and mostly did artist expositions, instead of songs, or regular radio. That one was no price after my original investment. The ISP, I was working for and allowed me to put in the machine to run it. We never had issues with it in the 3 years we did it.
Today, I am not sure how this would work, albeit I imagine that PA has a location, or a placement that is better, or more than just one of those cheapo machines on some Web Hosting Servers, that are not good enough ... it seems to be stabel enough that it must be way better and more than that ... but the issue would probably be that we would likely average about 100 or more feeds per hour ... and that would require bandwidth!
Or worse ... us have to hear from you sitting on the loo! Edited by moshkito - March 25 2011 at 15:01 |

why twitter such information, when offline I will notice when trying to enter, not likely I will first check twitter whether or not the site is online. and I don't need google to enter this site as I know the adress.
for internal information as to make the admins aware there's some problem, that's not really necesary too, as they will find out when it happens as it happens.
and besides that, I don't like twitter, I have to go to the toilet now to deliver something warm. C-Ya

No Twitter account is required (by the reader). All Twitters shows up first on a Google search. Let's say: 1. PA is down. 2. You don't know why so you go to www.google.com/your google bar on your web browser and enter "progarchives". 3. A Twitter will show up on page 1, near the top which for example says "PA is down due to [something] and will be up again in 4 hours time". No need to click on the Twitter at all, probably. The text is on that Google page. Your pulse will probably be lowered by this. Edited by toroddfuglesteg - March 07 2011 at 04:59 |

The idea is good, but I think more people here have Facebook than Twitter accounts.

Yes, dull men tend to blah-blah and love our own voices. Guilty as charged....... NOT TO COMPLAIN, but just to offer a possible solution and helpful scenario: 1. PA and/or MMA goes down. 2. An Admin/you put out on Twitter that "PA and MMA are down due to ...........". That will show up on Google, front page 3-4 item from the top when we are inputting "progarchives" as search word. 3. PA and/or MMA are back online again. 4. See point 2 with the message "PA and MMA are up again". This system can be arranged through the "follow the sun" scheme. In short; you need twitters in America, Euro and in Asia. This may be tricky though and is probably not possible. But even if you were twittering on the issue, this too would be sufficient. This is an extra layer of work so maybe not....... I do not complain. I only offer ideas. |

Anything can be arranged, question is whether it will work. The only people with access to the servers are M@X and Graphix. Twittering won't help your case because both are in Canada.
Apart from that, the number of days that no admin appears online in PA (and will thus not discover the outage) are close to 0. On days that indeed no admin appears online, the chance that they are offline in Twitter and other media is almost 100%. So yes, it can be arranged, but I doubt it will help. |

Every time something unnormal in a songbird's area happens, like an outtage for example, the songbird twitter and makes the world aware of the problem (mostly a cat/fox lurking in the area). I am up every morning well before daybreak every day so I know their twitters very well. I suggest that PA copies the songbirds and twitter everytime there is some unnatural things happening on our patch. This twittering will also show up on the top of Google if entering "progarchives" as a search word. My old webhotel actually copied the songbirds and were twittering like songbirds every time they had outtage. That was the only excellent service they provided. I suggest we copy the songbirds and introduce a twitter feed. The problem is that M@X is at sleep or counting sheep when we in the old world (Europe) wakes up (to a crescendo of twittering from the feathered songbirds). Hence, we need a couple of twittering Euro songbirds (admins) too. Can this be arranged ? |
