Montréal is a garbage can anyway. It's gliding on past glories. Sort of can't wait to get out of here sometime in the not too distant future.

Gaya are the dumping ground for garbage. That's what the cops seem to think. Gay=garbage=good place for a homeless.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

In Montréal if a homeless person is causing a rukus the police throw him in the cruiser and dump him in the gay village. Needless to say the gays are not to happy about this and an article appeared in this morning's Gazette exposing this practice. Where I live I knew that anybody who looks like that they are not supposed to be here is carted off by public security officers ( rent a cop ) and dumped downtown somewhere. Thearticle didn't make it clear why it was the gay section. What do gays and homeless people have in common? Am I missing something?

Pictures like this make me feel terrible for owning anything. Luckily I have a short memory. |

Its true, of course Im not saying they have it fine...but yeah in the US the very poor dont have it that bad relatively.
You can legit live off what we throw out. Especially compared to what its like in so many other places. |

There you go, here's a pic of how poverty looks like in my country of origin, Ecuador: I'm pretty sure all people in this family would love to live the life of an American homeless...

Even if I had the money, I don't believe in it at all. I'd rather spend my money on myself or someone I care about than a stranger's narcotics habit.

As I described in the Shred Room, I can (and have many times) fed my family (four of us) on $30 for the week- and we've never done without. It's amazing how resourceful someone here can be. I don't know of any homeless person in the US resorting to this. |

at the risk of sounding like a conservative
The very poor in America do have it pretty good. You can live surprisingly well off what we throw away. Not that it's good by any means of course. Edited by JJLehto - March 02 2011 at 18:38 |

No, but that's for complicated reasons: in the Paris subway, when I go to work, there's always, ALWAYS at least one people a day begging in the wagon. Then, you meet other beggars in the hallways.
Outside, you still can meet other beggars. My problem is: who should I give money to? - The little kids, maybe exploited by their parents/families (some of them are even trained to the art of pickpockets)? - The buskers (moreover, in Paris, we have "official metrobuskers"!!!) ? - The young twenty-something people who should/could be helped by their families or friends (what happened in their life?) - the crazies, drunkards, drug-addicts...? If I start giving money at a subway station, I should give everyday, at everyone.... And if I don't have spare change anymore, what do I do? I won't give 10 euros!..... Or should I? Sometimes, I develop some horrible way of thinking: I can understand why some immigrants are under the poverty line and can't live in decent conditions. But, when seeing young French people (I should even say French-French people, not a hint of arabian, african or asian origin) begging, I start saying: "What have you done - or NOT done to live in poverty and misery? Have you run away because of some stupid caprice? Come on, you STINK the middle-class!" But that's not... very intelligent: I don't know what happened to them. Too much debts to pay? Kicked out of home because they were homosexual, politically opposed to their families....? Abused by the family? I don't know and I'd better give, no matter the situation. I should give - but to who? |
